1:18Meaning
The report interrupts the prior report Another messenger arrives before the earlier one finishes, reinforcing that the disasters are uninterrupted. He states the setting: Job’s sons and daughters are together, eating and drinking wine, located at the oldest brother’s house.
Unit 2 (v. 19a): The cause is described as a great wind
The messenger draws attention to what happened next with “behold,” then attributes the event to a “great wind” coming from the wilderness. The wind is pictured as an outside force moving in from beyond the settled area.
Unit 3 (v. 19b): The house collapses and the children die; only one survives
The wind strikes the “four corners” of the house, implying a hit that compromises the whole structure. The building falls on the young people inside, and the messenger declares they are dead. He closes with the repeated claim that he alone escaped in order to tell Job.
