A request to be hidden and later remembered Job wishes God would hide him “in Sheol,” like placing him in concealment where suffering and divine anger cannot reach him. He asks to be kept secret only “until” God’s wrath passes, implying the anger is not the final word. Job also asks God to set an appointed time and then “remember” him, treating remembrance as God’s active return of attention and care.
The question of life after death and the posture of waiting Job asks, “If a man dies, shall he live again?” The question both exposes uncertainty and opens a door for hope. Literary Context
These lines sit within Job’s ongoing reply in the poetic debate section of the book, where he wrestles aloud with short human life and God’s seeming hostility. Just before this, Job describes humans as fragile and quickly cut down, and he contrasts people with trees that can sprout again after being cut. Against that backdrop, vv. 13–15 turn from lament to wishful imagining: if only death could function like a shelter until God’s disposition changes. The movement is from request (hide me), to question (can the dead live?), to a pictured future dialogue (you call; I answer).
Historical Context
Job is set in an ancient Near Eastern world that resembles a patriarchal household society: wealth is measured in herds, family heads act with priest-like responsibility, and legal and social life centers on clan honor and reputation. Sheol in this setting is commonly spoken of as the shadowy realm of the dead, the place where all end up regardless of status, not primarily a place of reward. Laments and wisdom poetry from the region often explore death, divine distance, and the limits of human understanding. Job’s language reflects that shared world of mortality and petition, while pushing its questions to their emotional edge.

Job speaks in the form of a wish, not a report of something God has promised. He imagines death (Sheol) as a place where God could “hide” him for a while, and he hopes God’s anger is not permanent. The language about God “remembering” is relational: Job wants God’s active attention and care to return, not mere mental recall.
The passage also frames Job’s life as hard duty (“warfare”) and pictures him waiting for a change he calls “release.” The ending image is relational and personal: God initiates (“You would call”), Job responds, and God again wants “the work of your hands,” meaning the person God made.
1) What Sheol means here. Some read Sheol as simply the grave: Job wants to die and be out of reach until God’s anger has passed. Others think Job is picturing Sheol more like a temporary hiding place where God could preserve him for later restoration.
2) Whether Job expects restoration after death. Some take “If a man dies, shall he live again?” as mostly doubtful—Job is testing an idea he cannot yet affirm. Others read it as a cautious opening toward hope: Job dares to imagine life after death or some kind of renewed divine meeting beyond death.
3) What “release” and the “set time” refer to. Some interpret the “set time” as a fixed moment when God would end Job’s misery (possibly within life). Others understand it as a set moment after death when God would “remember” and call Job back into restored relationship.
Why the disagreement exists The passage blends clear requests (“hide me,” “remember me”) with open questions (“shall he live again?”) and poetic images (“release,” “you would call”). Sheol language in Job can sound like the grave, but Job’s imagined future conversation with God can also sound like more than ordinary burial. Because the text does not explicitly say when the restoration would happen, readers weigh the images differently.
What this passage clearly contributes It contributes a portrait of faith struggling for language: Job can name God’s wrath as real, but he also dares to picture it as temporary (“until”). He treats God’s “remembering” as the turning point of hope. Explicitly, the text shows Job longing for renewed contact with God (call/answer) and for God to again value what he has made. Theological inferences about a fully developed doctrine of resurrection go beyond what the passage states, but the text undeniably presses the question of whether death is the end and imagines a future reversal as something God could initiate (Job 14:13–15).
