Lifelong pain for the wicked oppressor Eliphaz says the wicked person “travails with pain” throughout “all his days,” and that a fixed number of years is stored up for the oppressor. The point is not a brief episode but an ongoing condition: a life under strain, with trouble counted out ahead of time.
Terror even during prosperity The wicked person has “a sound of terrors” in his ears, as if he is always hearing danger. Even when he is “in prosperity,” a “destroyer” is expected to come upon him. Security does not quiet him; it becomes the backdrop for sudden reversal.

These lines come from Eliphaz’s second speech to Job (Job 15). Eliphaz responds to Job’s complaints and insists that Job’s words sound reckless and self-justifying. He turns from criticizing Job’s speech to painting a general portrait of how the wicked fare, stressing fear and collapse as their normal lot. The logic is straightforward: the wicked person’s life is marked by pain (v.20), fear even in good times (v.21), no confidence of escape (v.22), desperate searching (v.23), and overpowering panic (v.24).
Historical Context
The poem reflects an ancient Near Eastern world where security depended on food supply, kin protection, and the stability of local power. “Sword” and “destroyer” fit the common threats of raids, bandit violence, and sudden military attack; “wanders abroad for bread” evokes famine conditions and social vulnerability. The description assumes that wrongdoing often takes the form of oppression, using power to exploit others, and that such a life creates enemies and instability. Some readers take “the number of years…laid up” (v.20) as a fixed, predetermined lifespan or sentence. Others understand it more generally: the oppressor’s end is “counted” in the sense that trouble is reliably coming, without specifying an exact timetable.
“Destroyer” (v.21) is also read in two main ways: a human attacker (raider, enemy army) or disaster personified (calamity that “comes” like an invader). Either way, the point in the text is that prosperity does not remove the threat.
“Return out of darkness” (v.22) can mean escaping danger, recovering from a period of ruin, or avoiding death. The immediate pairing with “the sword” pushes many readers toward a life-or-death horizon, but the imagery can still include broader ruin.
Eliphaz speaks in dense poetic images rather than precise explanations. Several phrases can be literal (hunger, sword, attacker) or figurative (felt darkness, imagined terrors), and the passage does not stop to define them. The text’s force comes from piling up threats rather than clarifying exactly which ones will occur and when.
This section contributes a wisdom-style claim about the inner life of the wicked oppressor: wrongdoing does not yield settled peace. Even in “prosperity,” the wicked person expects reversal (v.21). The passage also portrays judgment as already “on the way” in experience—terror, dread, restlessness, and being overrun by distress (vv.21–24)—whether or not every detail is read literally. Within Job’s larger debate, these lines show what Eliphaz believes is the normal pattern of moral cause and effect, even though the book as a whole will test how reliably that pattern explains Job’s suffering.
