Question 1

In verses 20–21, what kinds of suffering are described, and how do they relate to time (“all his days,” “in prosperity”) ?

Accepted Answer

Eliphaz describes suffering that is both long-term and immediate. In v.20 the wicked person has writhing pain “all his days,” suggesting an ongoing condition rather than a short crisis. Then v.21 adds that even “in prosperity” he still hears “terrors” and expects a “destroyer.” Taken together, time language makes the fear feel inescapable: it persists across the whole life and also intrudes into the very moments that should feel stable. The passage is describing a person who cannot convert outward success into inward security.

Question 2

What does the phrase “years…laid up for the oppressor” add to the portrait in verse 20?

Accepted Answer

The phrase suggests that the oppressor’s future is not open-ended. Something about his life has a “counted” or “stored” set of years connected with trouble. The text does not specify whether those years are a fixed sentence or a general expectation of coming ruin, but it does make the future feel already prepared. This reinforces the theme that the wicked person lives under a shadow that cannot be talked away by present circumstances. It also keeps the focus on the “oppressor,” implying that the wickedness in view is exploitative power, not merely private faults.

Question 3

How does verse 21 portray fear as something internal rather than only external?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 emphasizes what the person hears: “a sound of terrors is in his ears.” That is an inner experience—he carries alarms with him. The destroyer may be real and external, but Eliphaz’s wording highlights anticipation and dread, not just an actual attack. The striking part is the setting: “in prosperity.” The passage is not describing fear caused by obvious danger in the moment; it is fear that persists despite conditions that normally reassure people. This makes the wicked person’s life feel haunted, as though threat is always audible.

Question 4

In verse 22, what is the relationship between “darkness” and “the sword” in the logic of the verse?

Accepted Answer

The verse links a bleak state (“darkness”) with violent threat (“the sword”). The wicked person does not trust that he will “return out of darkness,” meaning he does not expect recovery or escape from what has turned dark. The next line, “He is waited for by the sword,” intensifies that hopelessness: danger is not only possible, it feels poised and ready. Whether “darkness” is read as ruin, exile-like distress, or death, the sword line makes the outcome feel terminal. The logic is inward certainty of no escape matched with an external threat that seems already stationed for him.

Question 5

What images in verse 23 communicate instability, and how do they connect to the “day of darkness”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 23 presents the person wandering for bread and asking, “Where is it?” That depicts restlessness, scarcity, and a lack of settled home or supply. It may describe literal hunger, but at minimum it signals insecurity. Then the verse adds, “He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.” The “day” language suggests an approaching crisis point, not just a vague mood. Together, the images show a life that is already unraveling (wandering, searching) while also anticipating a decisive moment of ruin that feels close enough to grasp.

Question 6

How does the battle comparison in verse 24 shape the meaning of “distress and anguish”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 24 treats “distress and anguish” as active forces that overpower the person: they “prevail against him.” The comparison—“as a king ready to the battle”—frames the experience as an advancing army under a commander, organized and unstoppable. This is more than occasional anxiety; it is pressure that dominates and defeats. The metaphor also supports the passage’s wider theme of inevitability: the wicked person’s fear is not portrayed as irrational in the sense of being harmless, but as dread that corresponds to a coming defeat, like facing a prepared king on the battlefield.

Question 7

Across verses 20–24, what is the overall progression of the description (from pain to what)?

Accepted Answer

The passage moves from ongoing internal pain (v.20) to constant auditory terror and expectation of attack (v.21). It then deepens into hopelessness about escaping “darkness” and the sense that the sword is already waiting (v.22). Next comes visible instability: wandering, searching for bread, and the conviction that a decisive “day of darkness” is imminent (v.23). Finally, distress becomes overwhelming, conquering the person like a king advancing to war (v.24). The progression builds from chronic misery to escalating fear, then to a near-certain expectation of catastrophe that closes in and wins.
