Question 1

In v.17, what two actions does Eliphaz ask for and promise, and how do they frame his authority?

Accepted Answer

Eliphaz begins with a call for attention (“listen to me”) and then promises disclosure (“I will show you”). He presents himself as someone with access to reliable knowledge, not merely offering an opinion. The next line sharpens the claim: he will “declare” what he has “seen.” So his authority is framed as witness-based. Before he gives the content of his argument, he tries to secure credibility by describing his speech as reporting something grounded in experience rather than speculation or rumor.

Question 2

How does v.18 add a second source of credibility to Eliphaz’s claim in v.17?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 shifts from Eliphaz’s personal “I have seen” to a chain of transmission: “wise men have told” what they received “from their fathers.” That expands the basis from one person’s experience to a wider, older pool of insight. Eliphaz also insists this material was “not hidden,” meaning it was openly handed down rather than kept secret for a select few. In the flow of thought, tradition is presented as public, tested teaching that supports his personal observations.

Question 3

What does the parenthetical feel of vv.18–19 (in many translations) contribute to the argument?

Accepted Answer

The content of vv.18–19 reads like a supporting aside explaining why Eliphaz thinks his message should be trusted. Instead of moving straight into conclusions about the wicked or about Job, he pauses to build a foundation under his claims. This makes the argument sound less like a new theory and more like a report of established wisdom. The structure also signals that the “wise men” tradition and the description of the group’s stability are intended to strengthen the authority of what comes next, not to be the main subject.

Question 4

In v.19, what two descriptions are given of the group associated with the tradition, and what point do those descriptions serve?

Accepted Answer

The group is described (1) as those to whom “alone the land was given,” and (2) as a community among whom “no stranger passed.” Together, these stress exclusivity and stability. In Eliphaz’s rhetoric, that stability supports the credibility of the tradition: it comes from an established people with continuity, not from a mixed or shifting setting. The verse functions as a credibility claim about the tradition-bearers rather than as a detailed political history.

Question 5

What is explicitly claimed in vv.17–19, and what is only implied about the truth of Eliphaz’s later conclusions?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, Eliphaz claims that he has something to “show,” that he will report what he has “seen,” and that his message matches openly transmitted teaching from “wise men” and their “fathers.” He also claims that this tradition is linked to a stable community with exclusive land possession and no outsiders passing through. What is only implied (not proven here) is that these credentials guarantee the correctness of the argument he is about to make. The passage establishes claimed sources, not the validity of the coming application to Job.

Question 6

How do the key terms “seen,” “wise men,” and “fathers” work together to portray authority?

Accepted Answer

“Seen” portrays authority from lived experience—Eliphaz depicts himself as a witness. “Wise men” portrays authority from recognized expertise within the community—people known for insight into how life works. “Fathers” portrays authority from age and continuity—teaching carried across generations. Together they create a layered case: individual observation plus communal wisdom plus ancestral depth. In the rhetoric of the speech, this combination is meant to make the listener treat Eliphaz’s next claims as well-established rather than novel or personal.
