Consequences spill over to the next generation Zophar says the person’s "children" (children) will end up seeking the favor of the poor. The picture is of the family reduced so far that they must approach those once mistreated—either to ask for acceptance, relief, or to settle what is owed. In the next line, the wrongdoer’s own hands give back the wealth, stressing forced loss and reversal rather than secure inheritance.
Youthful strength cannot prevent the grave Zophar turns from family finances to the body. The bones are described as full of “youth,” meaning vigor or youthful strength lodged deep within. Literary Context
These lines come from Zophar’s second speech (Job 20), where he argues that the triumph of the wicked is brief and ends in a sharp reversal. Immediately before, he speaks of the wicked enjoying sweetness that quickly turns bitter and is vomited up (Job 20:12–19 frames this theme more fully). Verses 10–11 function as a focused snapshot of consequences spreading outward (to children and victims) and inward (to the body). The logic moves from social reversal (loss and repayment) to physical finality (youthful strength collapsing into death).
Historical Context
Job is set in an ancient Near Eastern, clan-based world where a household’s honor, security, and economic future were closely tied to the family head. Wealth could be accumulated through land, herds, and power, and the poor were especially vulnerable to exploitation without strong centralized courts. In such a setting, repayment and restoration often took tangible forms, including returning goods or making amends to injured parties. The passage assumes that a family’s standing can collapse quickly and that death levels even the strong, returning bodies to dust in ordinary burial.
Theological Significance
Job 20:10–11 is part of Zophar’s argument that a wrongdoer’s success does not last. The picture is of consequences that spread beyond the individual.

Second, “his hands shall give back his wealth” can be taken as repayment (restoration to victims) or as forced loss (wealth stripped away), though either way the point is reversal and loss rather than stable inheritance.
Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew wording allows a range of social scenarios without spelling out the mechanics. The lines are poetic and compressed: they describe the outcome (humiliation, reversal, loss) more than the exact process (legal restitution, community pressure, or sheer collapse).
What this passage clearly contributes These verses contribute a tight snapshot of moral fallout in Zophar’s worldview: exploitation does not stay private or confined to one generation. The aftermath reaches the next generation (“children”), reaches back toward the vulnerable (“the poor”), and reaches inward to the body (“bones…full of youth” yet ending “in the dust”). The passage states consequences; connecting those consequences to a universal rule about every case is an inference made in the larger debate of Job rather than a claim these two verses spell out on their own.
