Sweetness hidden and held in the mouth Zophar begins with a “tastes good” comparison: wickedness feels pleasant and satisfying, like something sweet. The person hides it “under his tongue,” suggesting secrecy and deliberate control. He “spares” it and refuses to let it go, lingering over it as long as possible, keeping it in his mouth rather than giving it up.
The inside-out reversal Despite the sweetness, once it becomes “food” in the belly, it changes. What was enjoyed turns within the person. Zophar intensifies the reversal by naming it “cobra venom,” shifting from dessert imagery to poison imagery: the harm is now internal and active.
Riches swallowed, then forced back out The image moves from “wickedness” to its payoff: “riches” that were swallowed down. The person cannot keep them; he will vomit them up. Zophar adds a direct cause beyond the body’s reaction: God drives these gains out from the person’s belly, implying an enforced loss, not a voluntary return.
Literary Context
These lines come from Zophar’s second speech in Job’s debates (Job 20). Zophar argues that the success of the wicked is brief and reverses suddenly. In this section he slows down to a vivid, bodily image: evil is enjoyed like food, then turns against the eater. The repeated “though… though… though… yet…” structure builds suspense: despite careful, prolonged enjoyment of wrongdoing, the outcome flips. The next verses continue the theme of losing ill-gotten gain and missing lasting enjoyment (moving from inner poison to outward ruin).
Historical Context
Job is set in an early, clan-based world where wealth is measured in livestock and household resources, and social life centers on family leaders and local honor. Wisdom teaching in the Ancient Near East often used concrete images—food, the mouth, the belly, snakes—to express moral cause-and-effect in memorable form. Snakes like cobras and vipers were known dangers, and “venom” was a strong metaphor for hidden harm. Zophar’s picture assumes a common moral expectation in this kind of teaching: secret wrongdoing may feel profitable, but it carries its own built-in consequences.
Theological Significance
Zophar presents wrongdoing as something enjoyed like a sweet taste that a person keeps in the mouth as long as possible (vv. 12–13). The key point is reversal: what starts as pleasure becomes inner harm (v. 14). The images move from mouth to stomach and back to mouth, stressing that hidden, savored evil does not stay private or harmless.

Venom taken in, death delivered The speaker repeats the venom idea in a more direct way: the person “sucks” cobra venom, as if choosing it. Then a second snake image follows: “the viper’s tongue” kills him. The mouth/tongue motif returns—what he hid under his tongue becomes, in effect, the means of his death.
The passage also ties inner evil to outward gain. “Riches” are pictured as something swallowed and then violently expelled (v. 15). Zophar adds that God is involved in that loss (“God will cast them out of his belly”), so the reversal is not only psychological or natural consequence but also portrayed as an act of God.
Some readers take “wickedness” as a specific kind of sin in view (often linked to greedy injustice because “riches” appears in v. 15). Others read it more broadly as wrongdoing in general, with “riches” as one common example of what wrongdoing can produce.
Some understand “God will cast them out” as direct divine intervention in judgment. Others see it as God working through the moral order of the world: ill-gotten gain does not last, and God is the ultimate one behind that outcome.
The poem shifts from “wickedness” (vv. 12–14) to “riches” (v. 15) without stopping to explain the link. That leaves open whether “riches” are the same thing as the “sweet” evil or the payoff of it. Also, the snake language (“cobra,” “viper”) is vivid metaphor, but the mention of God’s action invites questions about how immediate or mediated that action is.
Textually, it claims that wickedness can be genuinely attractive at first, and that a person can deliberately conceal and prolong it (vv. 12–13). It also claims that what is taken in turns “within him” into something deadly (vv. 14, 16), and that gains swallowed down will be lost, with God named as the one who forces that loss (v. 15). Within Job’s larger debate, this is Zophar’s strong statement of moral cause-and-effect: evil contains a built-in poison that eventually surfaces and destroys the one who consumed it.
