Literary Context
This verse closes Job’s longer speech in chapter 21, where he challenges his friends’ confident claims that suffering reliably reveals wrongdoing and that the wicked are quickly brought down. Job has pressed them to look at lived experience: many who act corruptly seem to flourish and die peacefully. Against that backdrop, the final line functions like a verdict on the whole exchange so far: their “comfort” fails because it is built on claims Job considers untrue and unresponsive to his observations. It also sets up the ongoing pattern: the friends continue speaking, and Job continues disputing their explanations.
