Exploiting debt and stripping the vulnerable Eliphaz claims Job took collateral from a “brother” without justification (using leverage over someone close or socially equal), and that he left naked people without clothing. The point is not careful legal process but harsh, unnecessary taking.

Literary Context
These verses sit inside Eliphaz’s third speech to Job (chapter 22), where he presses a tight cause-and-effect logic: severe suffering must reflect serious wrongdoing, so Job must have committed serious wrongdoing. After opening with the claim that Job’s conduct is extremely bad (v.5), Eliphaz moves immediately into examples (vv.6–9). The list escalates from financial exploitation to denial of basic necessities and then to systemic preference for the powerful over the vulnerable. The speech continues beyond v.9 into calls to change course.
Historical Context
The accusations fit common social realities in the ancient Near East: loans secured by collateral, a person’s outer garment serving as essential protection, and survival needs like water and bread being life-and-death in arid settings. Widows and children without a father were widely recognized as socially exposed, often dependent on community protection. Landholding and local influence could concentrate power, enabling elites to displace or disregard weaker neighbors. Eliphaz’s claims assume Job had enough status and resources to harm others through economic leverage and social gatekeeping.
Theological Significance
Eliphaz shifts from general blame to a specific charge list. He says Job’s wrongdoing is not small or occasional (v.5), then names concrete harms: abusive debt practices (v.6), leaving people exposed without clothing (v.6), refusing basic aid like water and bread (v.7), giving advantage and security to the already powerful (v.8), and mistreating those with least protection—widows and fatherless children (v.9).

At the level of the text, these are accusations, not proven facts. The passage also shows Eliphaz’s moral framework: exploiting need, withholding survival necessities, and leveraging power against the vulnerable are presented as serious evils.
One main question is what v.8 is doing. Some read it as part of the accusation: Job used his influence so “the mighty” got land and the “honored” lived securely, meaning he favored elites while others suffered. Others read v.8 more as a description of how society works—power tends to control land—used to set up the contrast with v.9’s treatment of widows and the fatherless.
There are also smaller questions about how literal some phrases are: whether “stripped the naked” means literally taking a person’s garment (especially through a pledge) or is compressed language for leaving borrowers without what they need. Likewise, “the arms of the fatherless have been broken” can be heard as physical violence, or as disabling them through forceful treatment that removes their ability to resist (their strength).
