The mob rises and trips him Job says a “rabble” rises at his right side, crowding into a place associated with honor or proximity. They shove his feet aside, as if making him stumble and stripping him of stable footing. Then they “cast up” their destructive routes against him, like building up access ways to press an attack.
They sabotage his way and hasten his ruin The attackers “mar” his path, meaning they ruin his route forward and frustrate whatever plan or progress he might have. They also “set forward” his calamity, actively advancing his downfall rather than merely watching it happen. Literary Context
These lines belong to Job’s long complaint in chapter 30, which contrasts sharply with his earlier description of past respect and stability in chapter 29. Job is answering his friends’ implied logic that suffering neatly tracks wrongdoing by giving a ground-level picture of what his suffering feels like socially and emotionally. The movement here is from external hostility (people rising, pushing, obstructing) to a warlike image of invasion (breach, ruins), and then to internal collapse (terror, honor blown away, welfare disappearing).
Historical Context
The passage assumes a world where public honor matters and social standing can be defended or destroyed in community spaces. Job’s images fit an ancient Near Eastern setting familiar with raiding, siege-like assaults, and public shaming, even if the “attack” is partly metaphorical. The “right hand” evokes the place of closeness or status, making the scene more insulting: those who should not be near him now crowd in. The description also reflects how vulnerable a person becomes when community protection fails and no one intervenes.
Theological Significance
Job describes his collapse in the language of a mob assault. A “rabble” rises up where honor should be (at his right hand), knocks his feet out from under him, and then acts like attackers building access routes to press the attack (v.12). They don’t merely watch him suffer; they actively damage his “path” and push his calamity forward (v.13). The picture intensifies into a breach-and-ruins scene, like defenses have failed and enemies pour in (v.14). The result is inward: fear is “turned on” him, his honor is chased away, and his well-being evaporates (v.15).

Some readers take the scene as describing actual physical violence or attempted violence by hostile people. Others read it primarily as metaphor: social collapse and public shaming portrayed with siege imagery.
Another real question is what “without anyone’s help” (v.13) means. It can be heard as “no one comes to help Job” (social abandonment). It can also be heard as “they do this without needing help” (unstoppable attackers, no restraint).
A smaller question is who “they” are. It may point to the “youth/rabble” already mentioned (v.12), or it may broaden to enemies and society more generally.
Job’s poetry blends bodily, social, and military images without stopping to mark which are literal and which are figurative. The phrases “on my right hand,” “ways of destruction,” and “as through a wide breach” can naturally fit both a real attack and a metaphorical description of being overwhelmed. Likewise, “without anyone’s help” can grammatically point either to Job’s lack of defenders or to the attackers’ self-sufficiency.
Explicitly, the text portrays suffering as including humiliation, social exposure, and loss of stability—not only private pain. It also portrays Job’s torment as something that feels directed at him (“terrors are turned on me”), and as a stripping away of honor and welfare (v.15).
