Mockery turns Job into a public joke Job says that “now” he has become “their song” and “a byword.” The point is not private criticism but public, repeatable ridicule: people circulate his name and story as entertainment and as an insult they can apply to others.

Literary Context
These lines sit inside Job’s long lament in Job 30, where he contrasts his former honor with his present humiliation. Earlier in the chapter he describes how people he once would not have associated with now ridicule and harass him. In vv. 9–11 the focus tightens on public shame: he is not merely ignored but actively used as a joke and target. The logic moves from what they do (mock, avoid, spit) to why they dare (God has “loosed” something and afflicted him, so they drop restraint).
Historical Context
Job reflects an ancient Near Eastern honor-shame world where public reputation and social rank mattered for survival and belonging. Being made into a “song” and “byword” describes a person becoming a stock joke and a shorthand insult in community speech. Spitting in someone’s face was a strong act of contempt, signaling that the person is treated as repulsive and outside normal respect. Job’s claim assumes that visible disaster and bodily affliction could be read socially as loss of status and protection, making others bolder in cruelty.

Job 30:9–11 presents a collapse of Job’s public honor into public scorn. He is not merely criticized; he is turned into repeatable entertainment (“their song”) and a ready-made insult (“a byword”). The mistreatment is physical and social: people keep their distance in disgust while also humiliating him openly by spitting in his face.
The passage also links human cruelty to Job’s perceived vulnerability. Job states that because “he” has weakened and afflicted him, others feel free to abandon normal limits (“they have thrown off restraint before me”). The text’s explicit claim is that Job experiences his suffering as connected to God’s actions, and that this perceived exposure emboldens the crowd.
Two main questions receive different answers:
Who is “he” in verse 11? Many readings take “he” as God, continuing Job’s direct attribution of his condition to God. Others suggest it could be another agent (for example, a human adversary), with God less directly in view.
What does “cord” mean? Some understand it concretely (like a bowstring), implying God has “unstrung” Job—removing strength. Others take it as something that secures or supports (like a tent-cord), implying God has undone Job’s stability or protection. A third option treats it more generally as what “holds” someone up or in check.
The Hebrew wording in v.11 is compact. The pronoun (“he”) has no explicit noun right next to it, and “cord” can point to more than one everyday object. The surrounding logic is clear (Job is weakened; people act shamelessly), but the precise picture used to describe that weakening can be read in more than one way.
This unit contributes a stark description of social shame as part of suffering: ridicule, avoidance, and contempt can cluster together, not cancel each other out. It also shows Job interpreting his humiliation in a vertical dimension: he speaks as if God’s affliction has made him socially exposed, which others exploit. The text does not excuse the crowd’s behavior; it reports that they choose to “throw off restraint.” It also does not resolve whether Job’s attribution fully matches God’s ultimate purposes; it preserves Job’s perspective within his lament (see the wider setting in Job 30:1–31).
