Question 1

What does the passage say happened to “the Word,” and how does it describe the Word’s new relationship to the community?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 makes two linked claims: the Word “became flesh” and “lived among us.” The first claim asserts a move into real human life, not just speaking to humans from afar. The second highlights proximity and shared space: the Word is not only revealed through messages but is present within the community’s life. The repeated “us/we” language frames this as communal memory, not a private experience. The verse presents the Word’s nearness as the setting in which the community claims it could see and later receive what God is like.

Question 2

According to vv. 14 and 18, what is said to be known or seen, and what is said to be unseen?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 sets a boundary: “No one has seen God at any time.” Yet verse 14 says, “We saw his glory,” and verse 18 adds that the only Son, closest to the Father, “declared” God. Taken together, the passage distinguishes between seeing God directly and seeing God made known through the Son. What is “seen” is not God’s essence in an unmediated way, but God’s character and presence revealed through the Word-become-flesh—described as “glory” and defined by “grace and truth.”

Question 3

How does the text connect “glory” with “only Son,” and what qualities are attached to that glory?

Accepted Answer

The narrator says the community saw “his glory,” then immediately qualifies it: it was glory fitting for “the only Son of the Father.” In other words, the glory seen matches the status and relationship of a uniquely related Son. The text then describes the Son as “full of grace and truth.” These are not presented as optional traits but as what the glory looks like when translated into observable life. The passage does not define “glory” abstractly; it points to grace and truth as its recognizable substance in the Word’s life among people.

Question 4

In v. 15, what are the two sides of John’s testimony, and what tension do they create?

Accepted Answer

John’s testimony holds together two statements: the coming one “comes after me” and yet “has surpassed me.” John explains the surpassing with a reason: “for he was before me.” The tension is that “after” suggests later arrival in sequence, while “before” suggests priority. The passage itself does not flatten the tension; it preserves it as part of the witness. This prepares for the prologue’s earlier theme of the Word’s prior existence, while also affirming a real arrival in time that people could point to and identify.

Question 5

What does v. 16 mean by receiving “from his fullness,” and who is included in “we all”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 shifts from what was seen to what was received. “Fullness” suggests an abundant source rather than a limited supply: what the Son has is not quickly exhausted. “We all” is broad, but in context it at least includes the narrator’s community that has been speaking as “we” since v. 14. The point is communal participation in what the Word-made-flesh brings. The gift is described as “grace upon grace,” implying generosity that is repeated or layered, not a single isolated benefit that ends the story.

Question 6

How do vv. 17–18 relate Moses, the law, Jesus Christ, and the making-known of God?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 sets two statements side by side: the law was given through Moses, and “grace and truth” came through Jesus Christ. This presents continuity in God’s dealings with people while also marking a new arrival tied directly to Jesus’ person. Verse 18 then explains the deeper significance: although God is not directly seen, the only Son closest to the Father “declared” God. Together, these verses connect the coming of grace and truth with revelation—Jesus is not only a teacher of information but the one through whom God is made known in a decisive way.

Question 7

What role does John the Baptist play in this paragraph, and how does his testimony support the narrator’s claims?

Accepted Answer

John the Baptist appears as an external public witness: he “testified” and “cried out.” His role is not to draw attention to himself but to validate the identity and superiority of the coming one. By saying the coming one surpasses him and was “before” him, John’s testimony supports the narrator’s larger claim that the one who lived among them is not merely another figure in Israel’s story. The narrative uses John’s voice to reinforce the prologue’s central point: the one now present in history carries a prior, greater significance.
