Question 1

Why does the passage emphasize John’s denials (“confessed…didn’t deny…confessed”)?

Accepted Answer

The wording slows the reader down and makes John’s rejection of key titles unmistakable. The delegation’s first and biggest question is whether he is “the Christ,” and John answers with a reinforced “no” (v. 20). Then the questioning pivots to other well-known expected figures (Elijah; “the prophet”), and John again refuses the labels (v. 21). The emphasis shows the situation’s stakes: officials need a clear report for Jerusalem (v. 22), and John wants no confusion between his role and the central figure he is preparing people to meet.

Question 2

What do the three titles (Christ, Elijah, the prophet) reveal about what the questioners are looking for?

Accepted Answer

Their questions show they are testing John against recognized end-time expectations drawn from Israel’s Scriptures and later hopes. “Christ” points to an anointed deliverer; “Elijah” reflects expectation of Elijah’s return before a decisive divine intervention; “the prophet” suggests another anticipated figure with authoritative teaching and signs. The order also matters: they start with the most climactic possibility (the Christ) and then work through other possibilities. Their concern is not curiosity alone; it’s public authority—who has the right to lead a renewal movement and administer a public rite like baptism (vv. 24–25).

Question 3

How does John’s Isaiah quotation function as an answer to “Who are you?”

Accepted Answer

John answers by giving a role instead of a status. Rather than naming himself as a major figure, he presents himself as “the voice of one crying in the wilderness” who calls for making the Lord’s way straight (v. 23). That shifts attention to the Lord whose way is being prepared. It also explains why his work is urgent and public: he is announcing that a decisive arrival is near. In the flow of the passage, this is the first positive identification after multiple denials, so it becomes the key lens for interpreting everything he is doing.

Question 4

Why does the interrogation move from identity to the practice of baptizing?

Accepted Answer

In the passage, the questioners treat baptism as an action that implies authorization (vv. 24–25). If John is not one of the expected headline figures, they want to know what gives him the right to administer a rite that gathers crowds and signals renewal. The narrative frames baptism as the practical “pressure point” that forces the issue: John’s denial of titles removes their usual categories for legitimacy, so they ask about the basis for his practice. This keeps the focus on how John’s work relates to the coming one rather than on John’s personal credentials.

Question 5

What does “I baptize in water” contribute to John’s explanation?

Accepted Answer

John describes his baptism in a limited, concrete way: it is “in water” (v. 26). In context, that sounds like a way of differentiating his activity from the greater work associated with the coming one. John is not presenting himself as the final agent of renewal; his baptism belongs to preparation. The statement also helps answer the authority question indirectly: John doesn’t claim authority from a grand identity, but positions his rite as part of a larger moment that centers on someone else. The contrast prepares for the next sections where John more directly identifies Jesus.

Question 6

What is the narrative effect of “among you stands one whom you don’t know”?

Accepted Answer

It heightens tension and introduces a theme of missed recognition. The questioners arrive to evaluate John, but John redirects evaluation toward someone already present, who is greater and yet unknown to them (v. 26). This turns the spotlight from John’s legitimacy to their lack of perception. It also implies immediacy: the expected figure is not only “coming” in the future but already on the scene. Within the Gospel’s larger flow, this prepares readers for the public unveiling of Jesus and for repeated moments where people misunderstand who he is.

Question 7

How does John’s “not worthy to untie the sandal strap” shape the passage’s view of John and the coming one?

Accepted Answer

The line expresses a steep hierarchy. Untying a sandal strap was a lowly servant task, and John uses it as a benchmark to say he does not even qualify for the most basic service in relation to the coming one (v. 27). That reinforces John’s earlier denials: he will not take honors that belong elsewhere. It also frames the coming one as uniquely superior, not just slightly greater. In the immediate setting, the statement functions as a corrective to any crowd-driven elevation of John and as a clue that the story’s center lies beyond John.
