Question 1

What does the passage say Peter does after Jesus is arrested, and what does it not say?

Accepted Answer

The text explicitly says Peter follows Jesus, and another disciple follows too (v.15). It does not say Peter runs away permanently or stays at a safe distance; he comes close enough to reach the high priest’s entrance area. It also does not describe Peter speaking to Jesus or helping Jesus directly. Instead, Peter’s movement is narrated in steps: following, waiting outside, then entering only after the other disciple speaks to the gatekeeper (vv.15–16). The focus is on proximity mixed with vulnerability—Peter is near the scene but not in control of access or safety.

Question 2

What role does the “other disciple” play in vv.15–16, and why is that role important to the story?

Accepted Answer

The other disciple functions as the access point into the high priest’s courtyard. Because he is “known to the high priest,” he goes in, then returns to speak with the woman at the door and brings Peter inside (vv.15–16). This is important because it explains how Peter ends up in the courtyard at all; without this connection, Peter remains outside. It also sets up the immediate identity check in v.17: Peter’s entry is not neutral. The narrative links access, exposure, and the coming denial.

Question 3

Where does Peter’s first denial happen, and how does location shape the moment?

Accepted Answer

Peter’s first denial happens at the door, at the moment he is being admitted (v.17). The question comes from the woman who keeps the door, so the denial occurs at the threshold between outside and inside. That location matters because it is a checkpoint: entry requires scrutiny, and the very act of entering triggers the question about belonging. John presents the denial as immediate and reactive—Peter has barely arrived inside before being identified as possibly connected to Jesus, and he denies it to avoid being marked out.

Question 4

What exactly is the question asked in v.17, and what does its wording imply?

Accepted Answer

The gatekeeper asks, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” (v.17). The question is about Peter’s identity and association, not about a specific action Peter took. The word “also” suggests that she expects disciples to be among those connected to the situation—perhaps because she knows the other disciple is linked, or because Jesus’ followers are being watched for. Calling Jesus “this man” creates emotional distance and may reflect the gatekeeper’s stance as an employee in a guarded space. The question is pointed but not a full interrogation.

Question 5

How does Peter respond, and what does the passage emphasize about his response?

Accepted Answer

Peter responds with a plain denial: “I am not” (v.17). The passage emphasizes its directness and brevity—no explanation, no partial admission, no attempt to redefine what “disciple” means. It is a clean disassociation at the first challenge. The story does not yet describe remorse or later reflection here; it simply records the denial in the moment. By placing it right after Peter’s admission into the courtyard, John highlights how quickly Peter shifts from following Jesus (v.15) to verbally distancing himself from Jesus (v.17).

Question 6

What does v.18 add to the meaning of the scene beyond basic setting information?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 does more than report cold weather. It shows Peter standing among “servants and officers” around a charcoal fire, warming himself with them. That places Peter physically in the company of those connected with the arrest and control of the space. The detail that they are warming themselves and that Peter joins them underscores his attempt to blend in rather than stand out as a disciple. It also creates a tense atmosphere: Peter is close enough to observe but surrounded by people who might question him. The scene’s ordinary details heighten the social pressure already introduced in v.17.

Question 7

How do vv.15–18 prepare for what happens next in the surrounding narrative?

Accepted Answer

These verses set up two parallel tracks: Jesus is inside being questioned, while Peter is outside under informal scrutiny. Peter’s first denial in v.17 begins a pattern that continues beyond this unit, and v.18 positions him in the courtyard where further recognition and questioning can occur. The “other disciple” provides the practical explanation for Peter’s presence in that risky location, making the denial a consequence of proximity rather than distance. The narrative momentum is toward repeated challenges to identity—Jesus’ identity before authorities and Peter’s identity as Jesus’ follower among guards and servants.
