18:19-21Meaning
Questioning about teaching and witnesses The high priest asks Jesus about two things: his disciples and his teaching (John 18:19). Jesus answers by stressing the public character of his speech: he spoke “openly,” taught regularly in synagogues and in the temple, and did not communicate his message in secret (John 18:20). He then challenges the procedure: instead of questioning him, the authorities should ask those who heard him, because they can report what he said (John 18:21).
