Others read it mainly as a strategic refusal to participate in a hostile interrogation, while still implying that his teaching can withstand scrutiny.
A smaller question is how to understand the “high priest” language in this unit: whether the questioner in v.19 is being called “high priest” loosely due to status, or whether the narrative is compressing the family’s leadership roles while making clear that Caiaphas holds the formal office in v.24.
John’s narration is brief, and several phrases function like summary speech (“always,” “openly,” “where…always meet”), which can be taken as strict description or as generalization. The setting also moves quickly between figures in the high-priestly household, leaving room for questions about how titles are being used.
