The focus then narrows from the group to Peter, who earlier denied Jesus three times during Jesus’ trial (John 18). The three questions in 21:15–17 echo that earlier threefold denial, and the commands to feed and tend establish what Peter’s next steps are to look like within the community.
Historical Context
The setting is a breakfast gathering beside the Sea of Tiberias/Galilee, with several disciples present after the crucifixion. Fishing is ordinary work in this region, and shared meals function as moments of restored relationship and public reaffirmation.
