Literary Context
This verse is the final line of the Nineveh episode (Jonah 3:1–10). Jonah has delivered a brief warning, the city has responded with widespread fasting and humility, and the king has called everyone to stop their violent behavior and turn from wrongdoing. Verse 10 functions like the narrator’s verdict: it connects the Ninevites’ visible change with God’s decision not to bring the previously announced calamity. It also sets up the next chapter’s tension by making clear that the warning was not carried out.
