Literary Context
This verse sits in the closing scene of Jonah, after Jonah has left Nineveh and is sitting outside the city watching what will happen (the setup in the prior verse). The narrative has already shown God directing events through created things, and this continues here with another “prepared” object. The story’s focus is not on Jonah speaking to Nineveh anymore, but on Jonah’s inner reactions as God interacts with him through a simple, everyday need: shade. The plant becomes the next step in a short chain of events that will expose what Jonah cares about most.
