4:7Meaning
God removes the plant by a small agent The next day at dawn, God “prepared” a worm, and the worm chews the plant Jonah had been using for shade. The plant’s damage leads to its withering, so the protection it provided is effectively taken away.
Unit 2 (v. 8a): God intensifies Jonah’s exposure to heat
When the sun rises, God “prepared” a sultry east wind. At the same time, the sun beats down on Jonah’s head. With the plant gone, Jonah is now fully exposed to the combined pressure of wind and sunlight.
Unit 3 (v. 8b): Jonah collapses emotionally and repeats a death-wish
The harsh conditions make Jonah faint or grow weak. He asks to die, speaking to himself and then aloud, and he states his conclusion: living is worse than dying for him in this moment.
