There is also smaller-scale uncertainty about details the text does not settle: whether “a worm” is one creature or a collective (like many larvae), how intense the “sultry east wind” was, and whether Jonah’s “fainting” describes an actual physical collapse or extreme weakness/distress.

Why the disagreement exists The story is brief and leaves mechanisms undescribed. It does not explain whether God’s “preparing” means creating something on the spot, directing an ordinary creature, or orchestrating timing in nature. Likewise, words like “worm,” “sultry,” and “fainted” can cover a range of possibilities, and translators must choose how specific to be.

What this passage clearly contributes These verses make a clear narrative and theological point: Jonah’s shade and relief were temporary, and God can both give and remove comfort through small and large means. The passage also heightens the contrast the book has been building: Jonah is deeply invested in his own relief and reacts strongly when it is taken, even to the point of repeating a death-wish (death). This sets up the closing dialogue (4:9–11) by showing Jonah’s values under pressure rather than merely stating them.
