Public humiliation and a morale speech When the kings arrive, Joshua gathers “all the men of Israel” and specifically addresses the chiefs of the fighting force who had gone with him. He tells them to step forward and place their feet on the kings’ necks, and they do so. Joshua then interprets the act as reassurance: they should not fear or lose heart; they should be strong and courageous, because this is how Yahweh will treat the enemies Israel fights.
