Second, the phrasing about Janoah (“on the east of Janoah”) can be read in slightly different ways. Some take it to mean the border line ran along Janoah’s eastern side (with the town right on the line). Others take it as a looser way of saying the route passed east of Janoah without the town itself being a boundary marker.
The text assumes local knowledge of landmarks and routes, but modern readers usually do not have that shared map in front of them. Also, place-names can repeat across regions, and the wording is concise—enough for people who knew the terrain, but not enough to settle every modern identification.
Explicitly, the passage shows how tribal land was defined by a traceable path using towns and major natural features rather than measured distances. Theologically by inference (based on the broader function of allotment texts in Joshua), it supports the idea that Israel’s settlement is portrayed as ordered and specific, not vague: land is assigned with recognizable edges, and the Jordan serves as a clear terminal marker for this segment of Ephraim’s boundary (compare the book’s larger theme of fulfilled promises such as Joshua 21:45).
