Question 1

What sequence of actions does Joshua 18:8–10 describe from start to finish?

Accepted Answer

The passage moves in a clear chain: (1) the selected men leave; (2) Joshua tells them to walk through the land, describe it in writing, and return; (3) Joshua states that after they return he will cast lots for them at Shiloh “before Yahweh”; (4) the men carry out the trip and produce a written description; (5) they organize the description into seven portions “by cities” and bring the book back to Joshua at the camp in Shiloh; (6) Joshua casts lots at Shiloh before Yahweh; (7) Joshua divides the land for Israel in line with those results.

Question 2

What does the text emphasize about where the decision is made and who it is made before?

Accepted Answer

Twice the passage anchors the decision at Shiloh and explicitly says it happens “before Yahweh” (v. 8 and v. 10). That repetition highlights Shiloh as more than a convenient meeting point; it is the recognized central place for this community decision. It also presents the allotment as a public act carried out with accountability to Yahweh, not merely Joshua’s private choice. The narrative still shows human action (survey, writing, casting lots), but it frames the decisive step as taking place in Yahweh’s presence at the sanctuary location.

Question 3

What is said about the written record, and what is not said?

Accepted Answer

The text is explicit that the men “described it by cities,” arranged it into seven portions, and put it “in a book” (v. 9). That tells the reader the process was documented and organized rather than improvised. What the passage does not specify is the exact content and detail level of the description: it does not say whether they measured distances, recorded resources, drew boundaries, or only listed towns with their surrounding areas. The emphasis is on producing a usable, organized report that can support a fair allotment process.

Question 4

How do “seven portions” function in the passage’s logic?

Accepted Answer

“Seven portions” functions as the bridge between the survey and the lot-casting. Joshua’s instructions anticipate that the land can be described in a way that allows division among the remaining groups, and the men return with a description already structured into seven parts (v. 9). The passage doesn’t explain how those portions were made equal or on what criteria they were drawn, but it does show they are intended to be assignable units. Then in v. 10 Joshua casts lots, and on that basis he divides the land, implying the lots distribute these portions to the appropriate recipients.

Question 5

Who are the main human agents in the passage, and how are their roles different?

Accepted Answer

Two sets of agents appear: the selected men and Joshua. The men’s role is investigative and administrative: they travel through the land, produce a written description, and organize it into seven portions by cities (vv. 8–9). Joshua’s role is authoritative and procedural: he commissions the work, receives the report, and then carries out the lot-casting at Shiloh before Yahweh, using the outcome to divide the land (vv. 8, 10). The text portrays cooperation—delegated labor plus centralized decision-making—rather than Joshua acting alone without input.

Question 6

What does “according to their divisions” most clearly communicate even if the exact referent is debated?

Accepted Answer

Even though “their divisions” can be understood at different levels (tribes, clans, or households), its clearest function in context is to stress that the final distribution is not random chaos but corresponds to recognized groupings within Israel (v. 10). The lots are cast “for them,” and the land is divided in a way that matches an existing organizational structure. The phrase therefore signals order and fit: the allotment is aligned with how Israel is already arranged socially, whether that means the seven tribes awaiting territory or subdivisions within those tribes.
