Question 1

What triggers the command to take twelve stones, and why does that timing matter in the story?

Accepted Answer

The command comes only after “all the nation” has finished crossing the Jordan (v. 1). That timing makes the stone-taking a response to a completed, shared event rather than a plan still in progress. It also highlights that the memorial is for the whole community, not just the priests or leaders. The crossing is treated as a decisive transition, and the instruction is framed as Yahweh speaking to Joshua at that moment, linking the memorial directly to divine direction and to the public completion of the crossing.

Question 2

What details does the text give about who is involved in taking the stones, and what does that suggest about representation?

Accepted Answer

The text specifies twelve men, “out of every tribe a man” (vv. 2, 4–5). Each man takes one stone, matching “the number of the tribes of the children of Israel” (v. 5). Explicitly, this spreads the action across tribal lines rather than concentrating it in one group. The narrative suggests the memorial stands for all Israel, because each tribe is represented in both the labor (carrying a stone) and the final count (twelve stones).

Question 3

Why does the passage emphasize the stones coming from the exact place where the priests’ feet stood firm?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 locates the stones in the spot where the priests had been standing with stability in the riverbed. This anchors the memorial to the center of the miracle as the story presents it: the priests’ position and the ark’s presence are tied to the Jordan being “cut off” (v. 7). The detail also prevents the stones from being random rocks from the riverbank. The memorial is meant to point back to a specific moment and place within the crossing event.

Question 4

How does Joshua’s instruction in verse 5 relate to the ark and to the earlier description of the crossing?

Accepted Answer

Joshua tells the men to pass “before the ark of Yahweh your God into the midst of the Jordan” (v. 5). This keeps the action connected to the ark, which in the narrative signals Yahweh’s covenant presence. The men’s movement is not simply a practical retrieval; it is staged in relation to the ark and the river’s “midst,” echoing the earlier portrayal of priests standing in the riverbed. The memorial’s meaning is therefore framed as covenant-centered, not merely geographical.

Question 5

According to verses 6–7, what is the intended function of the stones in the life of the community?

Accepted Answer

The stones are meant to be “a sign among you” (v. 6) that prompts later questions, especially from children: “What do you mean by these stones?” The passage then supplies a set answer: the Jordan’s waters were “cut off” before the ark of Yahweh’s covenant as it passed over (v. 7). So the memorial functions in two steps: a visible object that raises curiosity, and an authorized communal explanation that retells the crossing as Yahweh’s act.

Question 6

What exactly is the explanation Israel is to give when asked about the stones, and what parts of the crossing does it highlight?

Accepted Answer

The explanation focuses on the Jordan’s waters being “cut off” in front of “the ark of the covenant of Yahweh” when it crossed (v. 7). The emphasis is not on human skill, strategy, or bravery, but on a divine intervention associated with the ark’s passage. The answer also ties the stones to remembrance: “these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.” The story highlighted is a miracle at the boundary into the land, framed around Yahweh’s covenant presence.

Question 7

What does the passage explicitly say about where the stones are placed, and what does it leave unstated?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the stones are carried over and laid down “in the lodging-place, where you shall lodge this night” (v. 3). That indicates an immediate placement at the first overnight camp after the crossing. The passage does not explicitly describe the later fate of the stones, how they are arranged, whether they become a named site, or how easily future generations would find them. The narrative’s stress falls more on the stones’ meaning and the rehearsed explanation than on long-term site management.
