Instruction after the crossing When everyone has finished crossing, Yahweh speaks to Joshua. Joshua is told to arrange for twelve men—one from each tribe—to take twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan. The stones are to come specifically from the spot where the priests’ feet had been firmly standing. The men must carry the stones with them and place them at the place they will stay that night.
Joshua appoints the representatives and specifies the act Joshua calls the twelve men he had prepared, again stressing one man per tribe. He instructs them to go ahead of the ark into the river’s middle and have each man lift a stone onto his shoulder. The number of stones matches the number of Israel’s tribes, linking the memorial to the whole people.
The purpose—future questions and a fixed answer The stones are meant to function as a sign within the community. In the future, children will ask what the stones mean, and the community is to answer with a specific story: the Jordan’s waters were “cut off” before the ark of Yahweh’s covenant as it passed over. The stones are therefore established as an ongoing memorial for Israel “forever.”

Others read it as “for the foreseeable future” or “for as long as the memorial stands and the community continues the practice,” recognizing that physical monuments can be lost or displaced over time.
3) How visible and permanent is the memorial at the lodging-place? The text says the stones are laid down where they lodge “this night,” but it does not specify whether that place becomes a lasting, known site or whether the stones are later moved or incorporated into a more permanent setting. Some infer an intentionally public, lasting display; others keep the inference modest and note that the narrative’s main emphasis is the stones’ meaning rather than detailed logistics.
Why the disagreement exists The passage provides clear actions and purpose but leaves some details implicit. Phrases like “whom he had prepared” can describe earlier selection or simply organized readiness. Likewise, “forever” is a strong word, but the text does not describe the memorial’s later history. Because the story highlights meaning (a prompted question and a fixed answer), interpreters differ on how much to conclude about timing and permanence beyond what is stated.
