Question 1

What sequence of actions does verse 8 report, and who performs them?

Accepted Answer

Verse 8 reports a chain of actions carried out by “the children of Israel,” meaning the Israelites acting as instructed (in the larger story, representatives from the tribes). They (1) take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, (2) do so in line with what Yahweh had spoken to Joshua, (3) carry the stones across with them, and (4) lay them down at the place where they lodged. The verse stresses follow-through: Joshua commanded it, and Israel did it, ending with the stones placed at the camp location.

Question 2

How does the passage connect the stones to Israel’s tribal structure?

Accepted Answer

The passage directly explains the number: twelve stones are taken “according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel.” The stones represent the whole people, not just the individuals who carried them. This links the river crossing to Israel’s identity as a twelve-tribe community. Even though only some physically lift and transport the stones, the count makes a claim about representation: the crossing and its memorial belong to all Israel as organized by tribes, not merely to a smaller group or a single leader.

Question 3

What does verse 8 say about the relationship between Yahweh’s word and Israel’s actions?

Accepted Answer

Verse 8 ties Israel’s action to two directives at once: Joshua’s command and Yahweh’s prior word to Joshua. The narrator says they took the stones “as Yahweh spoke to Joshua,” emphasizing that Joshua’s instructions are not portrayed as merely personal initiative. The text’s explicit claim is alignment: Israel’s obedience to Joshua matches Yahweh’s direction. Theological inference may go further (for example, that leadership and community action should track divine guidance), but the passage itself focuses on this correspondence in the event being narrated.

Question 4

In verse 9, what specific location is associated with Joshua’s stones, and why is it described so precisely?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 places Joshua’s stones “in the midst of the Jordan,” specifically “in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood.” The precision ties the stones to the crossing’s most charged point: where the ark-bearing priests stood during the miracle of passage. The text’s explicit claim is geographic and ceremonial: it is not just “near the river,” but at the remembered standing place associated with the ark. This makes the marker point back to the moment of crossing and the ark’s role in it.

Question 5

How should a reader understand the phrase “to this day” in verse 9?

Accepted Answer

“To this day” signals that the narrator is writing from a later time when the stones were still known. It does not, by itself, specify how much later or what the author’s exact date is. It also does not clarify whether the stones were always visible above water or whether their continued existence was a matter of local knowledge tied to the site. The phrase’s main function in the narrative is to claim durability: the stone set in the Jordan was not temporary, but remained as an enduring point of reference when the account was told.

Question 6

Do verses 8 and 9 describe one stone memorial or two? What in the text supports each reading?

Accepted Answer

The text explicitly mentions stones in two locations: verse 8 has stones taken from the Jordan and laid down at the lodging place; verse 9 has Joshua setting stones in the Jordan at the priests’ standing place. This naturally reads as two sets. However, some readers think verse 9 restates the same event with added detail, since both verses mention “twelve stones” and the story is tightly focused on memorializing the crossing. The strongest support for two sets is the differing actions and places; the strongest support for one set is the repeated number and the narrative’s memorial theme.
