These verses sit inside the Gibeonite deception episode (Joshua 9). The visitors claim to be from far away and present worn-out supplies as proof, aiming to secure protection. The narrative has already shown Israel learning caution after earlier setbacks and victories, so the scene slows down to show how leaders evaluate information and make decisions. Verses 14–15 function as the turning point: what began as an investigation becomes a settled commitment. The story’s later developments depend on the fact that this decision was made and sealed before the truth is known.
Historical Context
The setting assumes Israel is newly established in Canaan, interacting with local groups in a landscape of city-states and shifting alliances. In that world, treaties and sworn oaths were common tools for survival, diplomacy, and avoiding conflict, and they carried social and political weight. Leaders were expected to act on behalf of the whole community, and their promises could shape future obligations. The passage also reflects Israel’s distinctive practice of seeking direction from Yahweh for major decisions; here, that customary step is explicitly omitted, making the political act also a religiously significant lapse within the story’s world.

What exactly happened when they “took of their provision.” Some understand it as sampling food as part of checking the travelers’ story. Others understand it more broadly as accepting the provisions (or their appearance) as evidence, without focusing on eating.
