Question 1

What does the text emphasize about timing in the discovery and verification of the deception?

Accepted Answer

The passage highlights speed and certainty. In v.16 Israel hears the truth “at the end of three days” after making the covenant, stressing how quickly the fraud is uncovered. In v.17 the story repeats “on the third day” as Israel travels and reaches the towns themselves, turning the report into direct confirmation. The repeated timing links discovery and verification tightly: the covenant is not old or forgotten when the truth emerges, which increases the tension about what Israel should do next.

Question 2

How does the list of cities in v.17 function in the story?

Accepted Answer

Naming the cities—Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim—anchors the narrative in specific locations and shows these are settled towns, not a roaming group. It also supports the point of proximity from v.16: Israel can reach these places quickly, “on the third day,” which undercuts the claim that the visitors came from far away. The list makes the deception concrete and sets up why Israel’s response will affect real communities with an ongoing presence.

Question 3

According to vv.18–19, what is the stated reason Israel does not attack, and who is challenged by the congregation?

Accepted Answer

Israel does not strike the towns because “the princes of the congregation had sworn” to them “by Yahweh, the God of Israel” (v.18). The oath, not military weakness or lack of evidence, is presented as the decisive restraint. The congregation then “murmured against the princes” (v.18), focusing blame on the leaders who made the pledge. In v.19 the princes respond publicly, repeating that they swore by Yahweh and therefore “may not touch them,” reinforcing the oath as binding.

Question 4

What solution do the leaders propose in v.20, and what outcome are they trying to avoid?

Accepted Answer

The leaders propose a two-part solution: “let them live” while still doing something to them (v.20). The aim is explicitly preventative: avoiding “wrath” that could come “because of the oath which we swore.” The text does not fully define the wrath, but it does tie the danger to breaking an oath made in Yahweh’s name. So the leaders frame their policy as a way to preserve life without treating the oath as disposable, even after deception is exposed.

Question 5

How do vv.20–21 describe the long-term arrangement for the spared people?

Accepted Answer

The arrangement is ongoing and communal in scope. In v.21 the princes confirm “Let them live,” and the result is a defined role: they “became wood cutters and drawers of water to all the congregation.” That wording suggests regular, continuing labor benefiting the whole assembly, not a one-time penalty. The narrative presents this as consistent with what the leaders had said (v.21), showing the decision is formalized and publicly articulated as Israel’s settled way of handling the situation.

Question 6

What tensions or contrasts are presented between different groups within Israel in vv.18–19?

Accepted Answer

Two groups are set in tension: “all the congregation” and the “princes.” The people grumble against the leaders because Israel does not strike the towns (v.18), implying many expected immediate force once the deception was known. The princes respond as a unified leadership group (“all the princes said to all the congregation,” v.19), insisting they cannot violate the oath sworn by Yahweh. The contrast highlights a conflict between popular reaction and leadership’s commitment to the sworn promise.

Question 7

What does the passage state explicitly versus what it leaves implicit about the moral logic of keeping the oath?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the passage states that the oath was sworn “by Yahweh” (vv.18–19), that this oath prevents Israel from striking the towns (v.18), and that breaking it risks “wrath” (v.20). Implicitly, the passage assumes an oath made in Yahweh’s name carries real consequences and obligations even when entered under false pretenses. It also leaves unstated exactly how the imposed labor relates to the promise’s original terms, requiring readers to infer whether this is a compromise, a penalty, or both.
