He questions the traveler about origin and destination; the traveler explains his route and emphasizes the immediate problem: no one is receiving him into a house.

The traveler notes they already have provisions for both people and animals, underscoring that the need is protection and lodging rather than supplies.
vv. 20–21
The old man offers peace, insists the traveler not remain in the street overnight, brings him into his house, cares for the animals, and the group washes and eats and drinks.
