Question 1

Why does Sisera choose Jael’s tent as a place to flee, according to v. 17?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 gives the narrator’s reason: Sisera runs to Jael’s tent because there was “peace” between Jabin king of Hazor (Sisera’s side) and the household of Heber the Kenite (Jael’s household). The text presents this as a practical calculation—Sisera expects safety due to an existing relationship, not because Jael has promised anything in the moment. This detail also heightens the surprise of what follows, since the place selected for security is tied to an agreement of non-hostility.

Question 2

What actions does Jael take to communicate safety to Sisera in vv. 18–19, and how does the text portray Sisera’s response?

Accepted Answer

Jael goes out to meet Sisera rather than waiting inside, repeatedly urges him to come in, and tells him not to be afraid. She then covers him with a rug, creating concealment and comfort. When he asks for water, she gives him milk and covers him again. Sisera responds by entering her tent and receiving her care, suggesting he accepts her signals of protection. The narrative presents him as increasingly dependent on her: first for shelter, then for drink, then for hiding.

Question 3

What does Sisera instruct Jael to do in v. 20, and what does that reveal about his strategy and fears?

Accepted Answer

Sisera tells Jael to stand at the tent entrance and, if anyone asks whether a man is inside, to answer, “No.” This is an explicit request for deception. It shows Sisera expects active cooperation, not merely passive shelter. It also reveals he anticipates pursuit and is afraid of being discovered. The instruction frames him as vulnerable and reactive: he is trying to control access to the tent through Jael’s words, trusting her to manage the danger at the doorway.

Question 4

List the concrete steps the narrator describes in vv. 21–22 leading from Sisera’s sleep to Barak seeing the outcome.

Accepted Answer

In v. 21 Jael takes a tent peg and a hammer, approaches Sisera quietly, and drives the peg into his temples until it goes into the ground. The narrator notes Sisera is in a deep sleep and then states plainly that he dies. In v. 22 the story reconnects to the chase: Barak arrives still pursuing Sisera. Jael goes out to meet Barak and offers to show him the man he is seeking. Barak enters, sees Sisera dead, and the peg remains in his temples.

Question 5

What role do the repeated coverings and the tent setting play in the flow of the scene (vv. 18–21)?

Accepted Answer

The coverings function as both care and concealment. Jael covers Sisera when he enters and covers him again after giving him milk, reinforcing the idea that he is hidden and protected inside the tent. The tent setting narrows the conflict into a private space where normal wartime power dynamics shift: a military commander is alone, unarmed in the scene, and dependent on a household’s resources and discretion. The repeated details slow the pace and build a sense of security that contrasts sharply with the sudden killing.

Question 6

What is explicit in the text about why Sisera is in a “deep sleep,” and what is left unstated?

Accepted Answer

The text explicitly states that Sisera “was in a deep sleep” at the moment Jael strikes (v. 21). It does not explicitly state the cause of that sleep. The earlier details—his exhaustion from fleeing, the covering, and the drink of milk—can fit naturally with deep sleep, but the narrator does not say the milk was intended as a sedative or that it induced sleep. The passage therefore gives a condition (deep sleep) without giving a clear causal explanation for it.

Question 7

How does v. 22 connect Jael’s act to the broader story of the battle and pursuit?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 ties the private tent episode back to the public conflict by placing Barak “as he pursued Sisera” at the moment Jael comes out. Jael effectively becomes the point of closure for the chase: she invites Barak in and shows him the man he is seeking. This makes Sisera’s death not only a personal event but a decisive narrative turning point in the campaign. The connection also underscores that Sisera’s end happens off the battlefield yet directly determines the outcome for those still in pursuit.
