Question 1

Why do the men of Israel ask Gideon to rule, and why do they include his son and grandson (v. 22)?

Accepted Answer

They connect Gideon’s leadership in battle with political stability afterward. Their reason is explicit: “for you have saved us out of the hand of Midian” (v. 22). They also ask for rule by his “son” and “son’s son,” showing they want a lasting arrangement, not a one-time war leader. In context, this sounds like a desire to prevent future crises by keeping power within Gideon’s family. The text does not say they consulted Yahweh about it; it presents the offer as a human response to military success and fear of returning insecurity.

Question 2

What exactly does Gideon refuse in v. 23, and what reason does he give?

Accepted Answer

Gideon refuses both personal rule and dynastic rule: “I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you” (v. 23). His stated reason is theological and direct: “Yahweh shall rule over you.” Explicitly, Gideon rejects becoming the continuing political head of Israel and rejects setting up his family as a ruling line. The text frames his reply as redirecting attention from a human deliverer to divine kingship. It does not, in this moment, evaluate whether Israel’s request was appropriate; it highlights Gideon’s refusal and his stated principle.

Question 3

How does Gideon’s request for earrings (vv. 24–25) relate to the earlier request that he rule (vv. 22–23)?

Accepted Answer

The passage places Gideon’s request immediately after his refusal of rule, inviting comparison. He declines a formal position (“rule over us”), but he does ask for valuable goods from each fighter’s spoil (vv. 24–25). The people comply readily and publicly by casting earrings onto a garment. The text does not call this a tax, but it functions like a collective transfer of wealth to Gideon. At minimum, it shows Gideon still receiving a significant benefit from the victory even while refusing a throne-like role.

Question 4

What details in v. 26 emphasize the scale and status of the spoil Gideon receives?

Accepted Answer

The narrator gives both a numeric total and a list of luxury items. The earrings alone weigh 1,700 shekels of gold (v. 26), signaling a large amount rather than a small keepsake. Then the verse adds items “besides” that total: crescents, pendants, purple clothing taken from Midian’s kings, and chains from camels’ necks. These details tie the spoil to elite status (kings’ garments, purple cloth) and to mobile wealth (camel ornaments), underlining that Gideon is collecting not only common plunder but high-value, prestige items.

Question 5

What does v. 27 say Gideon did with the gold, and what were the reported results?

Accepted Answer

Gideon uses the collected gold to make an ephod and places it in his city, Ophrah (v. 27). The text then reports two linked results: (1) “all Israel played the prostitute after it there,” describing a shift of devotion toward this object in a way the narrative treats as unfaithful; and (2) “it became a snare to Gideon, and to his house,” indicating harmful consequences that land on Gideon’s own family as well. The verse focuses on outcome rather than on explaining Gideon’s intent.

Question 6

In v. 27, how should the phrase “all Israel” be understood in context?

Accepted Answer

The phrase likely signals breadth of influence rather than a mathematically literal claim that every individual participated. The ephod is placed in Ophrah, and the text says Israel pursued it “there,” suggesting a destination people went to. In Judges, such wording can communicate that the practice became widely known, socially accepted, or representative of Israel’s behavior during that period. Whether it means most tribes, many households, or the nation as a whole in a general sense, the narrative point is that the ephod became a significant national-level problem, not a private family item.

Question 7

What does it mean that the ephod “became a snare to Gideon and to his house” (v. 27)?

Accepted Answer

A “snare” is something that traps and brings harm. The text ties the ephod to Israel’s unfaithfulness and then says the outcome rebounds onto Gideon’s household. It implies that Gideon’s project, though made from victory spoils, contributed to a situation that entangled him and his family in the fallout—whether social conflict, religious blame, or other forms of trouble the larger Gideon story will continue to unfold. The verse does not specify the mechanism, but it does connect Gideon’s action (making/placing the ephod) to negative consequences for his own house.
