Question 1

What outcomes does verse 28 report about Midian and about Israel’s land, and how are they connected to Gideon’s lifetime?

Accepted Answer

Verse 28 makes two linked claims: Midian is “subdued” so it no longer threatens Israel, and the land has “rest” for forty years. The verse also anchors that rest to a time marker: it is “in the days of Gideon.” That wording connects national security and stability to Gideon’s period of leadership rather than presenting it as a permanent change. The narrator’s focus is not on battle details (already covered earlier) but on the result: a long interval in which Israel is not being pressed down by Midian.

Question 2

Why does the text switch from calling the leader “Jerubbaal” to also naming him “Gideon,” and what effect does that have in this closing report?

Accepted Answer

In this section the leader is called “Jerubbaal” (vv. 29, 35) and also “Gideon” (vv. 30, 32, 35). The passage does not explain the name change here, but using both names keeps continuity with earlier parts of the story and ties together public memory and family record. In a wrap-up like this, double naming helps identify the same person across different settings: his home life (“Jerubbaal … lived in his own house”) and his public role (“the goodness … he had showed to Israel”).

Question 3

What details about Gideon’s family does the narrator emphasize in verses 30–31, and why might the mention of Shechem matter?

Accepted Answer

The narrator highlights scale and structure: Gideon has seventy sons “from his own body,” explained by having “many wives” (v. 30). Then it adds a different household arrangement: a concubine located in Shechem bears him a son named Abimelech (v. 31). The Shechem detail matters because it ties Gideon’s family into an important regional center and signals a connection outside his primary home base. Naming Abimelech in this wrap-up functions like a pointer: this son and this location will become significant immediately afterward.

Question 4

How does verse 32’s burial notice contribute to the story’s meaning, beyond reporting Gideon’s death?

Accepted Answer

Verse 32 places Gideon’s death within a remembered lineage and geography: he dies “in a good old age,” is buried in his father Joash’s tomb, and the location is specified as Ophrah of the Abiezrites. These specifics make Gideon’s story feel grounded in clan identity and a real place rather than ending as a vague legend. It also underscores that Gideon’s public role ends and his body returns to family space. In the flow of the passage, this sets up the next statement: once he is gone, the nation’s behavior shifts quickly.

Question 5

According to verses 33–34, what does Israel do after Gideon dies, and how does the narrator interpret that action?

Accepted Answer

After Gideon dies, Israel “turned again” and “played the prostitute after the Baals,” and they “made Baal-berith their god” (v. 33). The narrator interprets this as a failure of memory and loyalty: they “didn’t remember Yahweh their God” who had delivered them from enemies on every side (v. 34). So the text frames idolatry not only as adopting other gods but as forgetting a specific history of rescue. The speed marker (“as soon as Gideon was dead”) highlights how immediate and deep the reversal is.

Question 6

What additional failure is named in verse 35, and how is it connected to Gideon’s earlier role?

Accepted Answer

Verse 35 says Israel “neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal … according to all the goodness which he had showed to Israel.” This adds a social dimension to the relapse: it is not only about worship but also about relational obligations and gratitude. The verse implies that Gideon’s household should have received some form of loyal treatment that matched the benefits Gideon provided to the nation. By pairing this with forgetting Yahweh (v. 34), the passage suggests that spiritual unfaithfulness and broken human loyalty travel together in Israel’s pattern.

Question 7

What narrative “bridge” to the next chapter is already present in verses 30–31, even before any conflict is described?

Accepted Answer

The bridge is the introduction of Abimelech: he is named as Gideon’s son by a concubine in Shechem (v. 31). The passage does not yet describe his actions, but the narrator’s choice to include his name and maternal/locational ties signals future importance. In a summary section, family details are usually selective, so this one stands out. It prepares readers for a development where Gideon’s legacy is not only about past deliverance and rest but also about what happens through his offspring—especially one connected to Shechem.
