This closing note on Gideon’s life links public peace with private household realities. The text says Midian’s threat ended, and the land experienced “rest” for forty years while Gideon lived (v. 28). It then shifts from national security to Gideon’s home life: he returns to his house, has a very large family, and a son by a concubine in Shechem named Abimelech (vv. 29–31). Gideon’s death and burial are recorded with concrete family and place details (v. 32).

After Gideon dies, the narrative reports a quick spiritual and social collapse: Israel “turned again” to the Baals, treated Baal-berith as their god, forgot Yahweh as rescuer, and did not show “kindness” to Gideon’s house that matched his benefits to Israel (vv. 33–35). The passage presents this as a recurring pattern: stability during a leader’s life, then relapse afterward.

Where interpretation differs

Some questions are left open by the wording:

• How to read “forty years.” Some take it as an exact count; others see it as a rounded or conventional way of describing a full generation-long period of stability.
• What “played the prostitute” adds to the meaning. Many agree it is strong covenant-breaking language, but readers differ on whether it mainly emphasizes religious unfaithfulness, moral corruption tied to cult practice, or both.
• What Baal-berith means in context. Some read it as a local form or title of Baal connected to community agreements (“covenant”); others think it points to a particular shrine and its patron deity in Shechem.
• What “kindness” toward Gideon’s household involves. It could refer to material support, political protection, honoring obligations of loyalty, or some combination.

Why the disagreement exists The text reports outcomes (rest, relapse, forgotten deliverance, withheld kindness) more than it explains mechanisms. It also uses brief, value-loaded phrases (“forty years,” “played the prostitute,” “Baal-berith,” “kindness”) without defining them. And it introduces Abimelech and Shechem in a way that clearly sets up the next episode (Judges 9:1), but without yet stating how these details will matter.

What this passage clearly contributes

• It ties Israel’s peace to a limited time frame (“in the days of Gideon”), hinting that peace is not self-sustaining in the larger story.
• It connects leadership transitions with spiritual vulnerability: “as soon as Gideon was dead” they turned again (v. 33).
