Question 1

What specific actions and sounds describe the reaction of passersby in verse 15, and what do they communicate?

Accepted Answer

Verse 15 piles up visible and audible signs of contempt: clapping (not celebration for Jerusalem, but applause at her downfall), hissing, and head-wagging. These are public gestures that communicate scorn and disbelief. The quoted line about “the perfection of beauty” and “the joy of the whole earth” sharpens the meaning: the mockery targets Jerusalem’s former reputation. The point is not just that Jerusalem fell, but that her fall is treated as entertainment and a cautionary display to anyone who passes by.

Question 2

In verse 15, what is the effect of quoting the onlookers’ question about Jerusalem’s former titles?

Accepted Answer

The quoted question (“Is this the city…?”) forces a contrast between past and present. It recalls a shared public story about Jerusalem—people “called” her beautiful and a source of joy—then confronts the reader with how incompatible that reputation seems with the current ruins. The quotation also adds to the humiliation: Jerusalem’s identity is being narrated by outsiders, not by her own voice. The verse portrays shame as social and verbal, not only physical destruction.

Question 3

How does verse 16 intensify the scene compared with verse 15?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 narrows the focus from general passersby to “all your enemies,” and the gestures become more aggressive. The enemies “open their mouth wide,” hiss, and gnash teeth—signals of hostility and threat rather than mere gawking. Their words are a victory claim: “We have swallowed her up,” presenting the defeat as total. They also frame it as long-awaited: this is “the day” they looked for, now found and seen. The verse emphasizes that the city’s humiliation includes active enemy triumph, not only public ridicule.

Question 4

What parts of verse 16 are clearly the enemies’ perspective, and how does that matter for interpretation?

Accepted Answer

The lines “We have swallowed her up” and “this is the day that we looked for…we have seen it” are clearly direct enemy speech. That matters because these claims show how the enemies interpret events: as their achievement and their moment of vindication. The poem reports their boasting without endorsing their moral stance. The next verse (17) then provides the poem’s own explanation, which relocates ultimate causation away from enemy power and toward Yahweh’s purpose and prior word.

Question 5

According to verse 17, what is the stated reason behind Jerusalem’s downfall?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 explicitly attributes the outcome to Yahweh’s intent and prior command: he “purposed” it and “fulfilled his word…in days of old.” The verse portrays the destruction as deliberate and completed, not accidental. It also states the severity: he “thrown down” and “has not pitied,” describing a judgment without restraint in this event. Finally, it notes an outcome: the enemy is given occasion to rejoice, and the adversaries’ strength is lifted up (“exalted the horn”).

Question 6

How do verses 15–17 relate human reactions (mockery and gloating) to divine action?

Accepted Answer

Verses 15–16 show human reactions: outsiders mock Jerusalem’s reversal, and enemies celebrate what they see as total victory. Verse 17 then connects these reactions to a larger interpretive frame: Yahweh has acted according to a settled plan and an earlier word. That means the gloating of enemies is not presented as proof that they control history; it is a consequence that follows from the city being “thrown down.” The passage holds together social disgrace, military defeat, and theological explanation in a tight sequence.

Question 7

What does the repetition of “all” (passersby; enemies) contribute to the unit’s message?

Accepted Answer

The repeated “all” (v. 15, v. 16) creates an impression of comprehensive opposition and isolation. Jerusalem is not mocked by a few; the scene feels universal—everyone passing by, every enemy mouth turned against her. Whether the language is strict statistics or poetic totality, its function is clear: it heightens the sense of total humiliation and helplessness. That prepares for verse 17’s claim that the scale of the disaster matches a fulfilled purpose, not a minor setback.
