Literary Context
These verses sit inside the second poem of Lamentations (chapter 2), which describes Jerusalem’s collapse and the shock of life after its destruction. The poem moves between describing what happened to the city and giving voice to the grief of survivors. Just before this, the text urges Zion to cry out and plead, especially for children in the streets (2:18–12). Here, the focus turns to the failure of human comfort and leadership: the ruin is too great, and the voices meant to guide the people offered deceptive assurances. After this, the poem continues with appeals to God and descriptions of horror and reversal (2:15–22).
