Literary Context
Leviticus 12 sits in the broader block of purity instructions (Leviticus 11–15), which describe situations that temporarily restrict ordinary participation in sacred life. The chapter addresses childbirth specifically, first giving an initial short period, then a longer follow-up period, and later describing what happens when the days are completed (offerings and restoration in the remaining verses). Verse 4 is the center step in that sequence: it explains what the mother does—and cannot do—during the extended period before full reinstatement.
