Literary Context
Leviticus 12 sits within a larger stretch of instructions about ordinary bodily states and flows that affect a person’s ability to participate in Israel’s shared worship life (Leviticus 11–15). Chapter 12 focuses specifically on childbirth and then moves toward the offerings required when the days are completed (vv. 6–8). Verse 5 is the second half of the childbirth schedule, paralleling the earlier case of a male child (vv. 2–4) but with doubled time periods. The chapter’s movement is simple: birth leads to set days, which lead to a return marked by offering.
