Literary Context
Leviticus 12 sits inside the larger block of instructions about bodily conditions that affect a person’s participation in ordinary community and worship life (Leviticus 11–15). The book has moved from food distinctions (ch. 11) to bodily states and discharges that bring “clean/unclean” categories into everyday life. Chapter 12 narrows in on childbirth as a specific, common life event, and begins with a brief case statement (“if… then…”) that establishes a time period. The following verses (not included here) continue the timeline and describe what follows after these initial days.
