Question 1

What problem does the father describe, and how does he explain its cause?

Accepted Answer

The father describes a severe and recurring crisis affecting his only son: sudden screams, convulsions, foaming at the mouth, and ongoing injury that leaves the boy badly bruised (vv. 38–39). He explains the cause using spiritual language: “a spirit takes him,” and later the episode is described as “the demon” and “the unclean spirit” (vv. 39, 42). The description emphasizes both the boy’s suffering and the father’s urgency, setting up why the father publicly begs Jesus for help.

Question 2

What role do the disciples play in the scene, and why is their role important to the story?

Accepted Answer

The disciples appear indirectly at first, through the father’s report: he asked them to cast out the spirit, “and they couldn’t” (v. 40). This failure matters because it highlights a limit in the disciples’ current capacity and sets Jesus apart as the one who can decisively resolve the crisis. The story is not only about a healing; it also exposes a gap between association with Jesus and effective authority in a moment of need, which fits the passage’s later focus on the disciples’ misunderstanding (vv. 44–45).

Question 3

How does Jesus respond verbally before he heals the boy, and what might that response be addressing in context?

Accepted Answer

Jesus responds with a sharp lament: “Faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and bear with you?” (v. 41). In context, the immediate situation includes the disciples’ inability (v. 40), a desperate father, and a crowd watching. The text does not specify a single target, so the lament can be heard as addressing the broader environment of unbelief and distortion, while also fitting the immediate failure surrounding Jesus. After lamenting, Jesus moves directly to action: “Bring your son here” (v. 41).

Question 4

What actions does Luke emphasize in the actual healing/exorcism moment?

Accepted Answer

Luke emphasizes both resistance and authority. Even while the boy is approaching, the demon violently throws him down and convulses him (v. 42), showing the severity of the oppression. Jesus then “rebuked the unclean spirit,” “healed the boy,” and “gave him back to his father” (v. 42). The sequence matters: Jesus confronts the spirit, the boy is restored, and the social outcome—returning the child to his father—is highlighted, underscoring that the miracle results in concrete restoration, not only a dramatic display.

Question 5

How does verse 43 frame the crowd’s reaction, and what does that framing suggest about the meaning of the miracle?

Accepted Answer

Verse 43 says “they were all astonished at the majesty of God,” and then notes that everyone was marveling at “all the things which Jesus did.” This framing connects the public amazement not merely to Jesus’ ability but to God’s greatness. The text reads as if the miracle functions like a sign pointing beyond itself: the crowd is impressed by Jesus’ deeds, and Luke ties that amazement to God’s grandeur. It sets the stage for Jesus to speak a very different kind of “majesty,” one involving suffering rather than spectacle (v. 44).

Question 6

What exactly does Jesus predict in verses 44–45, and how do the disciples respond?

Accepted Answer

Jesus tells the disciples to take his words seriously: “the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men” (v. 44). The prediction is brief but heavy, focusing on being handed over and falling under human power. The disciples’ response is threefold: they do not understand; the saying is “concealed” from them so they do not perceive it; and they are afraid to ask about it (v. 45). Luke portrays misunderstanding not as neutral confusion but as linked with hiddenness and fear.
