14:66-68Meaning
First recognition and denial Peter is “below in the courtyard,” warming himself when a servant girl of the high priest sees him closely and claims he was with “the Nazarene, Jesus.” Peter denies it by insisting he neither knows nor understands what she means. He then moves away toward the entry area, and a rooster crows.
Unit 2 (vv. 69–70a): Second accusation and denial
The same servant girl sees Peter again and tells nearby people, “This is one of them.” Peter again denies the claim, now with more people involved as the audience.
Unit 3 (vv. 70b–71): Group pressure, identity markers, and escalated denial
After a short time, the bystanders themselves confront Peter, insisting he truly belongs with Jesus’ group because he is a Galilean and his speech gives him away. Peter intensifies his response, calling down curses and swearing an oath: he does not know “this man” they are talking about.
