Historical Context
The scene assumes rural travel in Galilee under Roman rule, where villages and small towns are the normal places to buy basic food, and a “desert” place means open, sparsely settled land rather than sand dunes. Money is counted in denarii, a common day-labor wage unit, so “two hundred denarii” signals a very large sum for ordinary followers. Large public gatherings could form around a teacher or healer, especially outside towns. People sitting in arranged groups reflects crowd management and orderly distribution in outdoor settings.
