6:45-46Meaning
Jesus separates the disciples from the crowd Jesus “immediately” makes the disciples get into the boat and go ahead toward Bethsaida while he sends the crowd away. After dismissing them, he goes up the mountain to pray, placing him physically apart from both crowd and boat.
Unit 2 (vv. 47–48a): The night setting and the disciples’ struggle
By evening, the boat is out on the sea and Jesus is alone on land. He sees them worn down by rowing because the wind is against them. The struggle is presented as prolonged; they are not making easy progress.
Unit 3 (vv. 48b–50): Jesus approaches; the disciples misread what they see
Near the fourth watch of the night, Jesus comes toward them walking on the sea. The text adds that “he would have passed by them,” then shifts to the disciples’ reaction: they think he is a ghost, cry out, and are deeply shaken. Jesus immediately speaks, urging courage, identifying himself (“It is I”), and telling them not to fear.
