Widespread hatred is expected “for my name’s sake,” but the one who holds on “to the end” will be “saved,” connecting endurance with final outcome. Others extend it into a broader principle against advance preparation for any teaching or preaching. The immediate setting (“when they deliver you up… in that hour”) points most directly to high-pressure hearings rather than everyday instruction.
What “saved” means and what “to the end” refers to (v.22). Some interpret “saved” as final deliverance before God, with “to the end” meaning faithful perseverance to the end of life or history. Others take “saved” more as rescue or vindication through/after persecution in this mission context, with “the end” meaning the end of the crisis being described. The verse itself does not spell out the time horizon, so the meaning is inferred from how one connects it to v.23 and to Matthew’s wider themes.
What “until the Son of Man has come” means (v.23). Readers differ on which “coming” is in view: (1) a near event within that generation (such as Jesus’ vindication and enthronement, often linked to later judgment on Jerusalem), (2) Jesus’ resurrection/return in power through the spread of the mission, or (3) the final future coming. The sentence ties the timeline to the disciples’ mission through “the cities of Israel,” which pushes interpreters to explain how the “coming” relates to a near-term mission while still fitting Matthew’s broader expectation of the Son of Man.
Why the disagreement exists The disputed phrases (“testimony,” “saved,” “until the Son of Man has come”) are brief and can work in more than one direction without extra details. Also, this chapter blends immediate instructions for a short mission with patterns that clearly extend beyond it (e.g., appearances before governors and kings). That mix makes it difficult to decide where the near horizon ends and the longer horizon begins.
What this passage clearly contributes The text explicitly presents Christian mission as vulnerable, contested, and sometimes legally dangerous (vv.16–18). It also explicitly connects that danger to Jesus (“for my sake… for my name’s sake”), reframing trials as occasions for witness (vv.18, 22).
