A shoreline classroom Jesus leaves a house and sits by the sea. A very large crowd gathers, so he gets into a boat and sits there, while the crowd stands on the beach. The arrangement highlights both the size of the audience and Jesus’ intent to address them directly.
Teaching by story Jesus speaks “many things” using parables and begins with a vivid scene: a farmer goes out to sow. The word “behold” signals, “Pay attention; picture this.”
Three failed outcomes As seed is scattered, some lands on the path and is quickly eaten by birds. Some lands on rocky ground with little soil; it sprouts fast but cannot endure heat because it lacks depth and roots, so it withers. Other seed lands among thorns; the thorns grow and choke it.
Literary Context
This scene begins a longer stretch where Jesus teaches in story form. It follows earlier episodes in Matthew where crowds increase and tensions rise over how to understand Jesus and his work. The boat setting creates a clear teaching moment and frames what follows as public instruction for many listeners. The story itself is the first of several parables in this chapter, establishing a pattern: ordinary images from daily life are used to press the audience toward reflection, and the closing line signals that hearing is more than noticing words.
Historical Context
The setting fits the shoreline of the Sea of Galilee, where fishing boats were common and open-air crowds could easily form. A teacher speaking from a boat would gain space from the press of people and a natural platform for being heard. The parable uses familiar agricultural realities: seed could scatter onto footpaths, thin soil over rock could produce quick growth that fails in heat, thorny patches could overtake crops, and better-prepared soil could yield an unusually strong harvest. Such details would be recognizable to rural and village hearers.
Theological Significance
Matthew presents Jesus as a public teacher addressing “great multitudes” (vv. 1–2). The move from house to shore, and then into a boat, underlines both the size of the crowd and Jesus’ intention to speak to them in an organized way.

What the boat signifies. Many readers take the boat as a practical choice—creating space and helping sound carry. Others think Matthew may also want it to function as a visible “teaching platform” that marks this as a major public address, without claiming the boat has a hidden meaning in itself.
How to take the yield numbers (100, 60, 30). Some read these as realistic but strong harvests to emphasize the success of good soil. Others hear them as deliberately heightened numbers to stress how fruitful the “good soil” outcome is compared with the failures.
What “ears to hear” implies. Some understand this mainly as a general call to pay attention and think. Others hear a stronger claim: that true hearing involves receptive understanding that not everyone in the crowd will show.
The passage gives the story but not its explanation yet, so readers infer meaning from (1) the narrative setting, (2) common teaching practices (boats, crowds), and (3) how Jesus’ closing line usually functions elsewhere. The text itself highlights outcomes and listening, but leaves several details open until later.
This opening scene frames the parable section as broad public teaching: many people hear Jesus, but hearing is not treated as automatic understanding (vv. 2, 9). The parable itself introduces a key contrast that will matter for the chapter: the message goes out widely, yet responses and results vary sharply (vv. 4–8). It also sets expectations that Jesus’ stories are meant to be pondered, not merely received as simple moral tales (v. 9; see also Matthew 13:18 for the later explanation).
