“The gates of Hades will not prevail.” Some take this mainly as a promise that death will not defeat Jesus’ community (endurance beyond the grave). Others take it more broadly as protection against hostile spiritual or earthly forces associated with the realm of death.
“Keys…bind…loose.” Some understand this as giving Peter a distinct, personal authority with ongoing effects. Others see Peter as a leading representative of the disciples, with the authority belonging to the community’s recognized leadership or to the gathered disciples as they carry out Jesus’ mission.
