Peter privately protests and rejects the idea Peter takes Jesus aside—away from the group—and begins to rebuke him. His words are both respectful (“Lord”) and forceful (“This will never happen to you”). Peter’s reaction assumes that this predicted outcome is unacceptable and should be prevented, not embraced.
Jesus rebukes Peter as an obstacle with a misplaced mindset Jesus turns and addresses Peter publicly enough to be direct: “Get behind me, Satan!” He calls Peter a “stumbling-block,” meaning Peter’s resistance would divert Jesus from his intended course. Jesus explains the reason: Peter is not thinking in line with “the things of God” but with “the things of men,” framing Peter’s protest as a human-centered perspective that clashes with God’s purposes.
Literary Context
This scene follows Peter’s confession about Jesus and Jesus’ response about what that confession means for the disciples’ future direction. “From that time” marks a new phase in the narrative: Jesus begins to explain, repeatedly and plainly, the path that leads to Jerusalem. The passage also sets up a contrast between correct words about Jesus and misunderstanding of what his mission entails. Immediately after Peter is affirmed in the wider context, he is corrected here, showing that recognition of Jesus does not automatically mean grasping the shape of his coming suffering and vindication.
Historical Context
Jerusalem was the central city for Jewish worship and leadership, where the temple stood and where major decisions and disputes were handled. The “elders, chief priests, and scribes” represent established leadership groups with social authority and influence, especially in matters of teaching, public order, and religious life. Under Roman rule, local leaders could exert significant pressure even when ultimate power rested with imperial officials. In that setting, a public figure drawing crowds and challenging norms could face coordinated opposition, making talk of suffering and death in Jerusalem an alarming but realistic prospect.

Peter objects strongly and tries to stop Jesus from accepting that path (v.22). Jesus treats Peter’s protest as a real danger, calling it a “stumbling-block” because it reflects “the things of men” rather than “the things of God” (v.23).
The passage also shows that a disciple can speak rightly about Jesus in one moment (the surrounding context) yet misunderstand what Jesus’ mission involves in the next. Correct identification of Jesus does not automatically equal correct expectations about how his mission will unfold.
What “Satan” means here. Some readers take Jesus’ words as addressing a literal personal evil being who is influencing Peter (or speaking through him). Others read “Satan” as a sharp way of naming Peter’s role at that moment: acting like an adversary by opposing God’s plan.
What “must” (v.21) implies. Many agree it signals necessity, not mere prediction. Some emphasize that the necessity is mainly God’s settled purpose (“this is the plan”), while others stress that it also reflects how Jesus’ mission will inevitably collide with Jerusalem’s leadership (“this is the outcome of this road”). Both ideas can fit the line of thought, but they are not identical.
The passage gives strong language (“Satan,” “must,” “stumbling-block”) without explaining every layer behind it. Jesus’ rebuke clearly identifies the mindset problem (human priorities versus God’s purposes), but it does not explicitly spell out whether a spiritual agent is present, or how to separate divine necessity from historical inevitability.
