Planning a verbal trap The Pharisees meet to figure out how to get Jesus to incriminate himself by what he says. They send their disciples together with the Herodians, opening with heavy praise about Jesus’ honesty and impartiality. Then they pose the target question: is it lawful to pay the tax to Caesar or not?
Jesus names the test Jesus recognizes their intent as “wickedness” and calls them hypocrites, directly identifying the encounter as a test rather than a sincere request for guidance.
Jesus asks them to show the tax coin. They bring a denarius, showing they have and use the currency tied to the tax. Jesus asks whose image and inscription are on it. They answer: Caesar’s.

This episode sits in Matthew’s Jerusalem conflict section, where different groups take turns challenging Jesus in public after his actions and teaching in the temple area. The Pharisees initiate the plan but send their students, and they partner with the Herodians, suggesting a strategic coalition aimed at political leverage. The passage functions as a “trap question” scene: opponents present flattery, ask an either-or question, and hope for a self-incriminating reply. Jesus responds by reframing the issue through a concrete object (the coin) and a concise statement that avoids their forced options, leading to their retreat.
Historical Context
The question assumes Roman imperial rule in Judea and the presence of a required tax paid in Roman currency. A denarius typically carried the emperor’s portrait and an inscription asserting imperial authority, making it a charged object for some Jews who were sensitive about images and about foreign domination. Pharisees and Herodians normally represented different interests: Pharisees focused on Torah-centered community life, while Herodians were connected to Herod’s pro-Roman political order. Asking whether it is “lawful” aims at more than personal opinion; it probes whether paying Caesar violates loyalty to God’s rule and could also expose Jesus to political accusation.

Matthew presents this scene as a deliberate public trap. The question about the tax is designed to force Jesus into a damaging “yes” or “no,” either with religious audiences who resent Roman rule or with political authorities who can punish resistance. Jesus refuses their framing. He makes them produce the tax coin and uses its “image and inscription” to separate two kinds of obligations: what is owed to Caesar and what is owed to God.
The text explicitly shows Jesus exposing their bad faith (“test,” “hypocrites”) and answering in a way that stops the trap. It also shows the challengers’ uneasy reaction: they marvel, then leave rather than continue the argument.
Some readers take Jesus’ answer as recognizing a real, limited role for civil authority: because the tax uses Caesar’s coinage, paying that tax can be appropriate, while loyalty to God remains higher and wider.
Others read the reply as more subversive. On this view, Jesus’ point is that Caesar’s claim is small and superficial (a coin with his mark), while God’s claim reaches to the whole person and community. The statement can be heard as quietly shrinking Caesar’s importance rather than endorsing him.
A further difference concerns what “the things that are God’s” refers to. Some think it mainly points to religious duties (worship, obedience, covenant faithfulness). Others argue it intentionally includes everything, since Scripture ties “image” language especially to humanity’s belonging to God.
The passage does not spell out the limits of “the things that are Caesar’s” beyond the immediate example of the tax coin. It also does not define “the things that are God’s.” Jesus’ use of the coin (“image and inscription”) is clear in the moment but open-ended in how far the principle is meant to extend.
