In first-century Judea under Roman rule, Jewish religious life centered on the Temple, Torah, and ongoing interpretation of what obedience looked like in daily practice. Pharisees were known for rigorous attention to the law and traditions meant to guide Israel’s faithfulness in varied situations; Sadducees were associated with priestly leadership and had different emphases in interpretation. Teachers were often tested in public with questions designed to expose weakness or provoke controversy. What it means that everything “depends on” these commands. Some read Jesus as giving a lens: every command should be interpreted and weighed by these two loves. Others hear a stronger claim: these two summarize the entire moral purpose of Scripture, so any reading of “law and prophets” that undermines love has missed Scripture’s aim.
