This unit sits inside Jesus’ public critique of the scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23. Just before it, Jesus describes leaders who enjoy public honor, special seating, and being greeted with impressive titles (23:5–7). Verses 8–12 turn directly to “you,” marking a contrast between his disciples’ community life and the honor practices he has just described. What follows (23:13–36) continues with a series of “woes” exposing harmful leadership patterns; so these verses function as a positive alternative, defining how his followers should relate to authority, recognition, and one another.
