A collective warning grounded in Scripture Jesus tells the disciples that all of them will fall away from him “tonight.” He supports the claim by quoting a written line: the shepherd is struck, and the flock’s sheep scatter. The image explains the logic: when the central figure is attacked, the group breaks apart.
A forward-looking promise after the crisis Jesus adds that after he is raised up, he will go ahead of them into Galilee. This places the coming scattering in a larger sequence: tonight’s failure is not the last word, because there will be a regrouping after his raising.
Peter’s pledge, Jesus’ timetable, and a shared vow Peter objects that even if everyone else falls away, he will not. Jesus answers with a precise prediction: that very night, before the rooster crows, Peter will deny him three times. Peter doubles down, saying he would die with Jesus rather than deny him, and Matthew notes that all the disciples say the same kind of thing.
Literary Context
This scene comes late in Matthew’s passion story, after the final meal and on the way toward Jesus’ arrest and trial (the surrounding section sets up betrayal, arrest, and abandonment). Matthew places Jesus’ warning next to a direct Scripture quotation to show the night’s events as both sudden and already anticipated in Israel’s writings. The conversation also narrows from “all of you” to Peter personally, then widens again to “all the disciples,” creating a contrast between confident vows and Jesus’ detailed prediction of what will actually happen next.
Historical Context
The setting is Jerusalem during the Passover season, a time when the city swelled with pilgrims and Roman authorities watched closely for unrest. Jesus and his disciples move at night, when public movement can be less visible but also more dangerous. The language about a rooster crowing points to ordinary night-to-morning timekeeping and the approach of daybreak. Mentioning Galilee signals a return to the region where many disciples are from and where much of Jesus’ earlier ministry took place, away from Jerusalem’s concentrated leadership and pressures.
