Morning decision and transfer to Pilate At morning, the chief priests and elders agree on a course aimed at Jesus’s death. They bind Jesus, lead him away, and hand him over to Pontius Pilate, identified as the governor. The movement of the story shifts from Jewish leadership action to Roman jurisdiction.
Judas returns the money and dies Judas, identified as the betrayer, reacts when he sees that Jesus has been condemned. He returns the thirty silver pieces to the chief priests and elders and voices guilt: he says he has sinned by betraying “innocent blood.” The leaders refuse responsibility, telling him it is his problem. Judas throws the money into the sanctuary area, leaves, and hangs himself.
The leaders’ decision about “blood money” and the field The chief priests take the silver but judge it improper to put into the treasury because it is “the price of blood.” After deliberation, they buy the potter’s field as a burial place for “strangers.” The narrative explains a lasting name: the field is called “Field of Blood” up to the writer’s time, connecting the name to the money and its use.
Literary Context
This passage sits inside Matthew’s passion story, immediately after Jesus is condemned by the Jewish council and after Peter’s denials (27:1 follows the nighttime hearing in 26:57–75). It advances the plot by moving Jesus from local leadership to Roman authority, setting up the trial before Pilate. At the same time, it pauses to trace what happens to Judas and to explain how the betrayal money is handled. Matthew weaves action with interpretation: the leaders’ decisions, Judas’s response, and the purchase of a field are narrated as events that also carry a remembered scriptural resonance.
Historical Context
Judea in this period was under Roman rule, and capital punishment in politically sensitive cases typically required Roman authorization, which explains why Jesus is delivered to Pilate. The “chief priests and elders” reflect Jerusalem’s temple-linked leadership, whose influence operated alongside (and under) Roman power. Temple practice included a treasury and concerns about what could be deposited as acceptable funds, especially money tied to violence. Burial arrangements mattered socially; providing a place to bury outsiders (“strangers”) fits concern for managing deaths and purity boundaries around the city.

Second, Judas publicly names what has happened as a moral wrong: he admits, “I have sinned,” and he calls Jesus “innocent blood,” even as the leaders refuse to share the burden of responsibility (Matthew 27:3–4). Third, the leaders treat the payment as morally contaminated—“price of blood”—and manage it in a way that keeps it out of the treasury while still putting it to use through the purchase of a burial field (Matthew 27:6–8).
Within Matthew’s larger story, these details deepen the claim that Jesus is not dying as a guilty criminal in a straightforward sense. The betrayer calls him innocent, the leaders dodge responsibility even while admitting the money is “blood” money, and the transfer to Pilate underlines that Jesus’ death will be carried out through a chain of human decisions. Matthew then adds his own narrator voice: the money, the field, and the naming of the place are not random accidents but events he sees as fitting what God had already spoken through the prophets (Matthew 27:9–10).
