Two storehouses, one heart Jesus forbids piling up “treasures” on earth, giving three reasons tied to ordinary experience: possessions can be damaged (moth), consumed/corroded (rust), or taken (thieves). He then commands the alternative: store up treasure “in heaven,” described as secure from those same losses. The closing line explains the logic: a person’s “heart” goes where their treasure is, so storage choices reveal and shape what a person is centered on.
The eye as the body’s lamp Jesus shifts to a picture about perception and inner condition. If the eye is “sound,” the whole body is “full of light,” suggesting clarity that illuminates the person’s life. If the eye is “evil,” the person becomes “full of darkness,” and Jesus intensifies the warning: if what is supposed to be “light” inside is actually darkness, the darkness is severe. The imagery links how one “sees” or evaluates to the resulting inner state.
The impossibility of divided mastery Jesus concludes with a social reality: nobody can be a slave to two masters. Competing ownership produces opposing attachments—hate/love or cling/despise—because real service demands preference. He applies it directly: serving God and serving Mammon cannot both be one’s service. The section presses for a single controlling loyalty that aligns desire, perception, and practice.
Literary Context
This unit sits within the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), where Jesus teaches about lived devotion rather than public display. Just before this passage, he addresses giving, praying, fasting, and trusting God rather than performing for human approval, and he teaches to ask God for daily needs (6:1–18). Right after it, he continues the theme by warning against anxious fixation on food, drink, and clothing, urging trust in God’s provision (6:25–34). Within that flow, 6:19–24 focuses on the inner direction of desire and the practical impossibility of split loyalty.
Historical Context
The sayings reflect ordinary economic realities in Roman-era Judea and Galilee, where wealth was often stored as clothing, grain, or metals vulnerable to decay and theft. “Moth” and “rust” evoke everyday loss: textiles can be ruined, stored food can be eaten away, and valuables can be stolen from homes. Household life also assumed slavery and mastery language, making the “two masters” picture socially intelligible: a slave’s service belonged to one owner. “Mammon” functions as a known term for wealth or property, treated here as a rival claim on a person’s allegiance.
Theological Significance
Jesus’ teaching links three ideas: what someone treats as “treasure,” how they “see,” and who or what they “serve.” The passage makes explicit claims that earthly wealth is unstable (it can be ruined or stolen), that “treasure in heaven” is secure, and that a person’s “heart” ends up where their treasure is. It also claims that inner “light” or “darkness” is tied to the condition of the “eye,” and it ends by stating that serving God and serving Mammon cannot be combined.

1) What “treasure in heaven” is. Some take it mainly as future reward given by God. Others read it more as secure investment with God—lasting value and safety rather than a specific “payback.” Many combine both: what is entrusted to God becomes lasting and will matter in God’s future.
2) What the “sound eye” versus “evil eye” means. Some read it as moral perception in general: a healthy inner perspective leads to a life characterized by “light,” and a corrupted perspective leads to “darkness.” Others connect it more specifically to how one views and uses wealth—generosity versus stinginess—since “evil eye” can be a way of speaking about greed or envy, and this section is about money and loyalty.
3) How to understand “Mammon.” Some treat it as a vivid name for money and property in general. Others hear a stronger person-like force in the word—wealth acting like a rival master that claims allegiance.
Jesus uses compressed images. “Treasure in heaven” is not defined in concrete terms, “heart” can refer broadly to the inner self, and “eye/light/darkness” can describe perception, morality, or both. The closing image (two masters) is concrete, but it also invites readers to ask what counts as “serving” wealth and how wealth becomes master-like.
