7:16Meaning
Nations see, then collapse into shame and silence The nations “see” something that exposes them, and the result is shame. What they thought was their “might” is no longer impressive; it becomes the reason for embarrassment. Their response is physical and social: they cover their mouths (a gesture of being silenced or unable to reply) and their ears are described as “deaf,” as if stunned or unable to process what has happened.
Unit 2 (v. 17a): Defeated posture pictured as crawling in the dust
The nations are compared to a serpent licking dust, and to earth-crawling creatures. The point of the picture is humiliation and lowliness: they are brought down to the ground. The language pushes the reader to imagine fear expressed not only in words but in posture.
Unit 3 (v. 17b): They emerge from hiding and approach Yahweh in fear
They “come trembling out of their close places,” suggesting they had been shut up in strongholds or hiding spots. Now they come out unwillingly, shaking. Their movement is toward “Yahweh our God,” indicating an approach that looks like compelled acknowledgment of his power. The verse closes by saying they will be afraid “because of you,” tying their fear not only to Yahweh but also to what he has done for Micah’s people.
