A private warning and a proposed hiding place Nehemiah goes to Shemaiah’s house; Shemaiah is described as “shut up,” suggesting he is confined or keeping himself in. Shemaiah proposes a plan: meet inside the house of God, specifically “within the temple,” shut the doors, and wait there. The reason given is an imminent assassination attempt, even specifying it will happen at night.
Nehemiah refuses on identity and propriety grounds Nehemiah answers with two pointed questions. First, he challenges the idea of fleeing: someone in his position should not run. Because “temple” can refer to different parts of the sacred complex, and because the text doesn’t detail Nehemiah’s status in priestly terms here, interpreters reconstruct the likely issue from Israel’s broader worship boundaries and from the logic of a planned smear campaign.
